Bringing the telly
Another way to get your UK telly working here is buy a set top digital box. We brought our widesceen telly and are glad we did - they are not cheap here. I didn't want to buy an aussie video because we had a fairly new UK one, anyway they are $200 for a half decent stereo one. You can buy a digibox for $300 and up. If you connect in your UK video as well you can use it to record as well as play (it will only record the digi channel you are watching though).
I regret leaving behind our Ondigital box for the people buying our house - it may not have worked here but if it had it would have saved us a few more $$$. |
Hi
We've just read your post - can you give some more info! If you buy a digibox and connect it to your uk tv and video, will you have any more bills; ie a monthly rental for programmes? Thanks |
No, the programmes are free to air. Similar to the terrestial channels in the UK. The Government here is supposed to have the same sort of commitment to changing from analogue to digital as they have in Britain.
Try http://www.dba.org.uk for info. I think you could rent a box if you wanted to pay for extra programmes, but they are mainly rubbish here anyway Cheapest box I've seen is from Teac at just under $300 |
No TV licence in Oz either - my fiance fell about laughing when I explained what it was! Over £100 a year just for the privilege of owning a TV set!

And the privilege of watching half decent programmes without having adds every 10 minutes. Have you seen the rubbish on Australian television. I'm afraid the Brits have got the best deal there. |
Foxtel has stolen audience from all free to air and advertising revenue from the commercial stations. The commercial stations were never much chop now only for desperados.
At $480 - $920 per year for Foxtel, £100 a year seems cheap. Foxtel Channel Packages and Monthly Fee |
