Bringing a dog from UK to Perth.

Hi All,
This is my first post although I have been a long time viewer.
Myself and family are moving to Perth area asap and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a company to handle bringing our dog (shih tzu) to OZ from the UK- we live in Durham. We validated our 176 visa in september 2010 and visited the Byford Quarantine center and were very impressed by the accomadation and service provided. I would like to hear peoples personal experiences after bringing there pets over.

Thanks All

Hi

We brought 2 cats over using Ryslip (I think that is the name) 18 months ago.

They stayed at Byford when they got here, they were both fine, I was really worried about them. We went to visit them every week, and they were quiet to start with but soon came round. They are now very happy Aussie cats!!

We too are moving over in the next few weeks. I have just been reading stuff from a company called Petair who specialise in this, but they couldn't give us a quote due to our location! We live in the north of Scotland....... And not on an island:)
Has any one else from Scotland got a company they can recommend please? Thanx

We have had quotes from Petair, Ladyhaye and Air Pets.

We are in the process at the moment & are using Ladyhaye. So far they have been extremely helpful & very good at liaising with our vet etc.

A warning - the first vet bill came in at £450 - that was for the Frontline treatment & 4 blood tests with fast-tracking due to the Christmas/New Year holiday

hi there, we moved to Perth 3.5years ago from Durham!! We brought our dog with us as we couldnt bareto leave her behind we used Airpets they were great and they did all of the tests etc instead of our regular vet and it cost less. We took her to Willowsea kennels a week before we left but she couldnt fly for a few days as one of the blood tests needed to be re done. There was also no space in quarrantine for her in Perth so she had to stay in Sydney then was put on a flight to Perth again this was actually a little bit cheaper than going straight to Perth. It was hard not being able to visit her but think it was for the best as our daughter would have been devasted visiting the dog at byford and leaving her again.

As much as we love our dog she has not been the same i think the constant noise from the other dogs in the kennels really affected her she has become quite nasty towards other dogs ( used to roll on her back if a dog came near )
and she doesnt do so well with the heat we often have to leave aircon on while we are out. if we had our time again i seriously think we would not have brought her with us.

We used Golden Arrow this time and were pleased with the service. They were a lot £400 or so, cheaper than Airpets who also quoted. However we used airpets when we moved to Bermuda five years ago and the travel crates provided by Airpets that time were much larger than the ones Golden Arrow used, which must have been the absolute minimum and were also very dark. Another lesson that you get what you pay for.

Most animals come out of quarantine unscathed, but ours had a tough time and we had to send in the vets every two days for the last fortnight. It was a nightmare, this was Sydney, the kennels are really awful too. I will never again frown on anyone that decides not to take their pet.

Thanks for your replies, they are really helpful. my only concern with my dog is that she is a very old 9 yrs old. She stresses easily and can barely stand the heat up here in Inverness without the heat in Oz!
She has never been in kennels and I know it is going to stress her out even more. On the other hand, she is my girl and I didnt get her to leave her behind............I suppose the blessing here is that if I decide not to take her then my son is going to look after her for me, and my 2 cats would come with us as they are both very young and will adapt easier....i hope!

Wish me luck!

I hope the OP finds a solution to this for them.......good luck guys......x

We are in the process of using GoldenArrow down England so far so good we drive our Mason down on the 6th January he fly's out on the 11th and we fly on the 13th. I am worried on how he will cope as he hates being locked up and has only been in Kennels once, although he is 6 in February and fit so :fingerscrossed:. The company based in Scotland wanted an extra £800  to fly him from Edinburgh to London?

Re: Bringing a dog from UK to Perth.

We moved to Rockingham in April 2010 and used Airpets to transport our black lab Bella. We sent her over 2 weeks before we left the UK as we were doing a lot of travelling around. I made calls to the Byford quarantine station every few days to check how Bella was. On our arrival in Aus we made the decision not to visit her as we would have found leaving her in the kennels very heartbreaking. We collected her early on Mothers Day!! The noise was unbearable and I was very worried about whether the experience would affect her behaviour. She was fine!!!!! Very happy to see us all and just the same old Bella we all knew and loved. The rental we were in had a dog next door who barked constantly and we did worry that Bella would bark too having been in kennels for 4 weeks but she paid no attention to it what so ever.

Bella seems to be coping well with the heat but she loves the water and we're lucky enough to live very near to a dog beach so she keeps cool by dipping in the ocean. We don't have air con but I think Bella finds the tiled floors a better sleeping option than her bed or the sofa!!!

For us there was never a choice as to whether or not to bring her as she's as much a part of our family as the kids but we were worried about how the whole experience would affect her. It seems that she is completely unaffected by the whole thing and is as happy and loveable as ever!!
