Default Bringing Dog to Oz from Uk for Holiday

My family want to bring their dog with them for a few months when they come to visit me in Sydney. The dog has a pet passport as gores to france from Uk often, so i think getting back into UK no such a problem, my question is:

what is regulation for bringing pets into Australia for a few months. Has anyone dones this. I would really be greteful of some comments.

Thanks.

Christian and Jules.

I'd imagine the dog wouldn't get out of quarantine before they are due to leave again.

Presumably it would be no different than bringing it in permanently. A couple of grand for shipping him over, and xx weeks in quarantine - wouldn't have thought it was worth it unless money no object. Also the injections would have to be uptodate and ensure the pooch hasn't had the lepto thingy injection or it won't get in anyway.

30 days...

Although they will not be able to do all the stuff with a dog in Oz as back in the UK.
They cannot go in any National Parks, cannot be off lead in Reserves etc. Can be restrictive, especially if they owners want to see lots of Australia...

I think it's 4 weeks, but not 100%.

If they are coming for that long then it may not be too bad, although you may want to check if the dog would need to go into quarantine in the UK. Pet passports are only for European travel I thought, so maybe they would require it from over here.

It will cost quite a lot as well. A few grand to get him here, then probably the same or more to get him back again.

Cost us about $5,000 to ship a Cocker Spaniel out (including all injections, quarantine bills etc).
not cheap - and I presume it would be more going back to the UK from Oz (well, it is for humans - so probably the same for dogs!)

Default Re: Bringing Dog to Oz from Uk for Holiday

you'll need....

blood test
vet health check
export permit
import permit
flights
quarantine
30 days in quarantine
+ cost of getting dog back to the UK

for us the total was probably close to £4000 for two dogs - just to get them here!

in aussie you'll need accomodation where you can keep a dog (are you in a rental? are dogs allowed? do you have a fence?)
if family are touring in a rental car does it allowed dogs?
what about holiday accomodation if taking a long trip?
does the area you live in require a dog licence or permit?
what about injections for over here? (heartworm etc)
paralysis tick and flea treatment?

bearing in mind that you can nip out with the dog in the car and leave them there while you for e.g. dash to the shops (too hot!), you'll need somewhere safe to keep it when you're not taking it with you. chances are you'll need to keep it on the lead at all times? what about the heat? what about the travelling, both here and getting here??

It might be really nice to bring the family pet on holiday - I took my two over the paris for 4 days once and we all stayed in a hotel - it was great!!!! But a jaunt over the channel and back is a bit different to travelling for 20 odd hours in a plane, to one of the most quarantine countries in the world!!!! think of the poor dog - to go through all of that in the space of a few months??????????

IMO - not worth it!
