Bring or buy a bed

Right another question for you folks already out in Oz. I am moving soon and we decided against buying a new double bed (no wise cracks :o its just old ok!!) we thought it may be better just to get it out in Sydney after we arrive not realising a lot of stuff is a lot more expensive in Oz. Is this true or are they comparable?. Thoughts or links to bed shops in Sydney much appreciated.

One thing to watch out for is that bed sizes can be different in Oz so if you bring a bed, bring several years worth of linen too just in case you can't get the right size.

I agree totally. We brought two UK doubles with us, and they are not the same size as either an Australian double or queen-size. Fortunately, my mum has just visited and I got her to bring me some fitted sheets.

Australian & International bed sizes

Double beds are very difficult to find in Australia - stores stock Queens and Kings, and Doubles are usually only available by special order.

Ok great, but what on prices?

Where you can compare like with like, Ikea charge at least £100 more for the same name bed in Oz than the UK, may be higher with the latest drop in the £. The sizes are different but roughly similar.

Add the shipping cost in plus the problem if the mattress wears out before the bedframe and there is nothing in it.

We were going to buy a new bed and bring it out but now don't think there will be a saving.

Oz always seems higher priced until you know what the 'deal' price is.

We were in the same scenario as as you. We bought beds in UK and shipped them over. You can get bargains here as we have shopped about for other stuff. Linen or Manchester as they call it here is very expensive though. Get it in the sales from the UK if you're there over xmas. As the guys on here say the sizes can be bit different but we got doubles from UK and they fit here. Think its king/queens that are different. To summise if its a double you're after I'd get the bed from here (oz) and bring all the linen/sheets/pillows etc from the UK. We bought tons of it over and been well worth it

What will you sleep on until your bed arrives? Things like beds, vacuum cleaners, iron, linen, washing machine are hard to live without for 2-3 months so you usually end up buying despite the extra cost and using the ones you ship for "spares".

Generally stuff seems more expensive over here (check out fortywinks.com.au or snooze.com.au) so if you're bringing a container anyway it may be worth bringing one.

As for the different mattress sizes - a queen is the equivalent of a uk king and I believe a king is the equivalent of a uk super king.

Hope that helps.

Not sure about comparability- beds can vary a lot in quality and cost in both countries. Probably cheapest new in oz would be about £400. Again what will you sleep on until yours arrives in 2-3 months? Buy a new one if you possibly can. We have just bought two.

It helps, but the sizes (mainly the length) are different so if the mattress drops in a bed frame it may not fit.

Australian sizes of beds are different to UK sizes.

When our son went out to Oz he bought one of the bedroom packages. Was told it would take 4 to 6 weeks to deliver, but they lent him a bed until bedroom set arrived, which was nice.
