Bought a 4x4, and a house, just need a boat now !

Ok ,so, since we've been here we've ended up with a 4x4 (98 Nissan Patrol 2.8TD with winch, roo bars and snorkel !) and have now bought a house (hopefully if all goes well !) - see pics/links.

House link : http://www.reefcityrealty.com.au/ind...TOKEN=90662070

ticks all the boxes in an upcoming area with loads of local amenities and access to beaches, CBD, tablelands etc.

Only thing left is a boat of some description. What are my options bearing in mind that it'll be hard enough persuading the missus to let me buy a tinnie let along an ocean going cruise liner !

1 stipulation - it must be small enough to go on a trailer and be stored at home.

What are the limitations of the various sizes of craft and licencing requirements. e.g. I know that I can't go out to the reef in a tinnie for example but think that also it may get me up rivers that a bigger boat can't.

We'll be using the boat for fishing for definite - lakes, sea and rivers. Maybe towing the kids on tyres etc. on the lake ? Would like to go to islands and or reef if poss.

What is the cost of each size of boat and where to look. Pics also please if poss so's I know what I'm looking for !

I'm in Cairns BTW but would travel if it made financial sense.

Andy.

This site is pretty good for information.

http://www.marinews.com/boating.php

Be careful as many boats suitable for going far off shore will be big and heavy and hard to launch and retrieve without some help.

It really has to be a compromise. Most tinnies under about 5 metres would be dangerous in any chop and are more suited to estuary/inshore use.

thanks G. Yes, that's it isn't it, a compromise. Might be a tinnie or small vessel with 1/4 cabin for now and then see how it goes. Would love to have somethin capable of getting out to the Reef though.
