NZ is a chip off the extinct continent Gondwana.
Both are correct.

As far as I remember, Australia is considered a continent, and Oceania is considered to encompass the whole region including Australia.

Sometimes this continent is refered to as 'Australia', 'Oceania' and 'Australia-Oceania'. Confusing isn't it?

It's still not part of Asia geographically - can't really predict which way Australia will go in the future. Makes sense to get closer to Asia - but the current direction the PM is taking us seems to be toward the US with the 'free' trade agreement.

Nearly all Australias business is in Asia , as for the free trade agreement get a life its an attempt to get more farm produce into the USA even if it was signed the Yankies would find a way to export more to Australia and at the same time stopping Australian produce getting in becauce of the Farm lobby there .

Australasia, may not be politically correct but that is what they call it here.

Probably because they are far more linked to Asia, busniness, trade distance wise. Sure its an own continent but Asia is the big influence business wise. Who are their Neigbours? not europe.

Funnily enough anybody stepping outside between October and March will get a very clear picture of what bloody part of the world they are in.

On a map Australia, climate, business, location, Trade = Asia.

Another interesting interperatation here is that the UK is not part of Europe.

And why is the UAE called the Persian Gulf>

Its not a western country, nor is it technically Asian. But without Asia it would sink. As for Europe here you barely hear about it unless you pay for world news.

:lecture:
Australasia is Australia and NZ (without the Oceanic islands). Neighbours are Asia (closest), Africa, South America and North America.

Going to Stratford-Upon-Avon during July or August you'll hear more America voices than British - still doesn't make the UK part of North America.

Again, geographically Australia is in the continent of Australia as defined by the earth's tectonic plates...

http://geology.er.usgs.gov/eastern/plates.html

More trade is done with the US than Asia and without the US the Australian economy would sink - Melbourne's and Hobart's climate is not similar to Kuala Lumpur's or Singapore's.

Picking on Hobart or Melbourne is all very clever, certainly not the most typical of Australian Weather tho is it?

However if I was in Perth Cairns or Darwin, I would be a few of Hours from Asia and about a day from North America.

You could pick this post to bits all day long, but lets face it we all know here we are a hell of a lot closer to Asia than North America!

Pick Pick Pick away but it does not change the fact that our closest neighbours are ASIAN.

Wrong again It imports most from the USA but exports most to
Asia.
It comes off worse of with its trade to America and is in the red, where as the UK exports 6 more to the USA and is credit.

I stand corrected - Australia does more trade with Asia (APEC) than the US - 72% of exports and 70% of imports is with the APEC countries.

Top 2 trading partners for Australia ( 2001-2002)
=====================================
Exports to Japan = $22.8 billion
Imports from Japan = $15.5 billion
Total = $38.3 billion

Exports to US = $12.0 billion
Imports from US = $21.5billion
Total = $33.5billion

AndyH.

P.S. Hmmm... Funny how the posts have switched from "what continent Australia is in" to "who is Australia's nearest neighbour" and attempted childish insults. Bang goes another thread.

Sorry but Dotty had a point without Asia Australia would sink , America owns masses of Australian business but rapes the Country where as Asia keeps it afloat.

The Asians I know are hard working and have good manners a few of the drug gangs are iffy but so what, , but runing the country on the lines of most Asian countries would be a culture shock would it not?
