books about Oz
In preparing myself for the move to Australia in September I've been doing some reading up on the place and it's history. at the moment i cant get enough info, my enthusiasm is topping the scale.
also has anyone else found that they are startled by how knowledgable Australians are about England and it's history when they come here? i guess it comes down to enthusiasm..
anyway, thought i'd give a couple of recommendations..
the first book i read was based on a radio 4 programme. Can't remember the name of it but it basically and fairly humourously went over the standard (european setlement) history.
but that was completely overshadowed by a book by Philip Knightly called 'Australia - the biography of the nation'. Covering the whole of the 20th Century it describes the main social and political events including wars, immagration, unions, strikes and relationships with other countries. fascinating book, in depth but very enjoyable.
i've just finished Bill Bryson's 'Down Under' which is full of humour and a real page turner. he also sneaks a lot of interesting history in there in his relaxed style.
next is Fatal Shore. looks interesting and seems to be really liked but after Bill Bryson this will probably take a bit of getting into.
what next - anyone got any recommendations?

How about "The Fatal Impact" by Alan Moorehead? It's about the impact of Europeans on the people and landscape of the Pacific - in Tahiti, Australia, and Antarctica - between 1767 and 1840. There's a lot specifically about Captain Cook's voyages. It's very interesting and well written.
