Block unwanted calls or mail

Block unwanted calls or mail
In the UK you can register with these people....
http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/
http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/fps/
http://mpsonline.org.uk/bmpsr/
Takes about 1 month to activate and we found they worked.
Advertising calls and junk mail disappeared.
Actually we did get one advertising phonecall after about 6 weeks. I asked why they were phoning a TPS registered number and they hung up right away. I believe firms can get heavy fines for breaching the code.
Anyone know if there is something similar in Aus ?

Re: Block unwanted calls or mail
I've registered with all those but because my business is advertising in Yellow Pages and Thomson the marketing companies started phoning me up again!
Spoke to TPS and they said they shouldnt be doing it but it's such a pain having to get the details from the companies to report them....
Plus doesnt help with the pre-recorded "you've won a holiday" rubbish!

That should cut down on the amount of mail that will be forwarded on to Oz.

Re: Block unwanted calls or mail
Doesnt seem to be an MPS in Oz, but found this which may be useful:
Question: Can I ask a business to stop sending me unsolicited mail ('junk' mail)?
Answer: Yes, although it depends upon the circumstances in which the business collected your personal information.
Some small businesses do not come under the Privacy Act (for more information see Information Sheet 12 issued in 2001).
Those businesses that are covered by the Privacy Act must stop sending you unsolicited mail if you ask them to, unless they originally collected your information in order to send you direct marketing material.
Example 1:
XYZ Company used your warranty details to send you marketing material about other unrelated products.
XYZ Company would have to stop sending you their direct marketing material if you asked them to do so. They would also have to let you know that they planned to use your information for direct marketing. Depending upon the circumstances, XYZ Company should be telling you how you can stop receiving unsolicited mail every time they contact you, unless they had your consent to send you direct marketing material.
Example 2:
ABC Marketing Company collected your personal information for the specific purpose of sending you direct marketing material about their products.
The Privacy Act does not prevent ABC Marketing Company from sending you unsolicited mail. ABC Marketing Company must still meet other obligations in the Privacy Act, which among other things mean that they must let you know the purposes for which they have collected your personal information, the organisations that they usually pass your information on to, and the fact that you are entitled to access your personal information (for more information about organisations' obligations under the Privacy Act see the Guidelines to the National Privacy Principles.

Re: Block unwanted calls or mail
Well, I'm going to invest in a 'No Junk Mail' sign for my mail box, cos its getting ridiculous the amount of flyers from Bunnings, Mitre 10, Pizza Hut lj hooker etc. I mean it was useful at the start when we didn't know what these places were, but its crazy now, I sometimes find my real mail on top of the mail box because the postie couldn't fit it in due to all the flyers.
So once I've got the flyer nonsense sorted, I'll look into stopping the other crap. I think nipping it in the bud is the best idea. First time I get a unsolicited letter written specifically to me, I'll write to them and ask what mailing list I'm on, and work from there!
