Perth's much the same as any multicultural city - every shade of pink, white, black, brown and yellow and everyone seems to muddle along together quite nicely. Got my hair done by a girl from Somalia today, saw an Indian doctor yesterday, shopped at my local Vietnamese store this week.

You'll be fine Khaysha

As a black guy - this depends on your reaction rather than how people treat you because of your race. I wouldn't say Perth is more racist than London, but in terms of multicultural relations it is a few decades behind. It does have it's fair share of bogans.

They will require local experience and that is is what you should be concerned about, unless you are looking for typical backpacker jobs.

Most, if not all, States require you to get a certificate in responsible bar work now - have a look into that when deciding where to go

I'll answer in place of Joe. Multi cultural relations are decades behind London owing to the relative newness of different cultures here in Perth. In the 90's there were very few black faces on the streets. Even those from the Sub Continent were a rarity.
Perth has come a long way in 15 years, and especially the last five. Hardly comparable with the global mix of London though. A true world city.

Perhaps London is the backward city in this respect.

Thanks for the answer Troubadour, but you're talking about demographics. I was interested in Joe's perspective of multicultural relations.

Well as multiculturalism is at a relatively recent stage and still limited in number compared to London demographics do play a part. The cultures here give every appearance of staying largely within their own ethnic group. Perhaps Joe may offer you his perspective as well.

Sorry but I don't agree with your analysis of the demographics.
2011 ABS Census
WA was home to the highest proportion of overseas born
residents in Australia:
almost one-third of Western Australians were born
overseas (30.7%)
more than half of the WA population had one or both
parents born overseas (51.6%).
Equal numbers of people come from English and non-
English speaking countries:

The concentration of overseas born residents is higher in Perth, at 35%.
The 2011 UK Census reports that the concentration of overseas born residents in London is 37%.

I agree that older migrants from a non-English speaking background may find it more difficult to integrate into their local community, whether this be London or Perth. I don't think that extends to younger people though.

You've got a degree and are fairly sure you can get a visa but you're planning on doing bar work? If you're coming on a WHV, I suggest you get your RSA as soon as you arrive otherwise you won't be getting bar work.

I tend to agree. Perth is mainly Brits and Saffas
