Another hare brained idea of mine!!!

I am thinking of getting a couple of walkie talkies for me and the hubby for when we get to Geraldton to save on mobile costs.
I am looking or something that will work up to about 8-10k in town that I dont need a licence for.

Does anyone know what I might be needing because all the technical facts are confusing me LOTS.
