Smile Birth Certs & Passports - help please!!!!

Hi

I'm in the early stages of visa stuff - permanent migration on a skilled visa.

Our son (3) will be getting a brand new passport - no problem - but my passport has only got until 2008 left and my husbands is 2007 I think (more panic as have just tried to find my important documents folder & it's gone walkabout lol!)

Do we need to renew them now or can we wait until we get our visas? Planning on going to Oz by end of 2006.

The other thing is that my full birth certificate hasn't got my dads details on. My mum and dad never married and he is a **** so his name's never been on my birth certififcate. I know his full name, DOB and last known address (although he wouldn't co-operate if we neede to get anything on paper about him signed etc) Any idea whether this will be a problem?

Thanks

Ruth (Zenamehtyst)

You don't need to renew them now, but do renew them before you get any Australian visa stamped in them (makes life much simpler that way).

As long as it's a long form birth cert it should be acceptable.

Will you then have to send photocopies of new passport to DIMIA before getting the visa stamped?

What happens if you get visa stamp and then require a new passport in 2 years time (when in Aus), what happens re the visa stamp?

You need a new stamp, or you carry visa around in an old passport which risks hassle.

So, is it worth getting new passports now( ours run out in 2007 and we reside in Belgium) although we hope to be there by Christmas this year and apply for residency 2 years later!

Up to you.

When you get PR (or if you get PR - applications often don't work out) you'll need a new visa stamp then, so maybe just renew your passports in Australia.
