Bikes on trains
Anyone know if you can take a bicycle on the trains in Melbourne?
Just wondering whether to buy a bike when I go on my next look see -just booked to go again in Jan. I'll be there a month and thought that if its not too hot I could cycle around?)
Can't afford a car hire for more than a week or so .

Helmets are compulsory in Oz BTW, in case you aren't aware.

I used my UK helmet in Oz - although it is a model that you can buy worldwide, including in Oz. Saying that, there are different regulations - hubby had a Giro helmet which according to one cycle shop didn't meet Aus standards (even tho it was the same helmet as used by Lance Armstrong!)

the helmet I have is a TRAX head start. Made of polystyrene. Would be light to take with me - better look into Oz cycle rules a bit more.

I have even heard an announcer on a station as a train arrived that the biker was to get off and get the next train, which looked quite embarrasing for the guy concerned.

It's true that officially you must use an Oz-approved one, but who's going to look? I would have thought that the police have better things to do than to ask you to take the helmet off so they can look for the stamp of approval. Well, I'm going to take my old US one with me so at least I've got something to wear until I get round to buying a local one.

I hadnt remembered about this rule and for the last 3 weeks have been out cycling without a helmet <naughty me> Police cars have passed me on the road and just driven by so I think if they arent concerned about somebody totally breaking the law then they arent gonna ask to see if you have an AS stamp in the helmet
Ooops - corrected for speeling errors
dammit - i meant spelling
