Hi there, we have just this morning arrived back in the UK following our visa validation trip. We have on this trip and previous ones stayed in several of the big 4 holiday parks on the east side of Australia with our 3 children ages 15, 13 and 1 year old, and can highly recommend them and there accommodation. We have stayed in the following parks in Queensland - Cairns coconut caravan resort, gateway village resort Brisbane, and treasure island holiday park Gold Coast. We opted for the larger studio type accommodation in the resorts giving the older kids (and us) a little more space in the apartments, they have always been of a high standard with all mod cons that you could need and even lovely a jacuzzi bath in one of them! The parks themselves we have always found to be clean, tidy and well staffed with nice pool areas, tennis, internet, bar/bistro etc; and in season some organised events for the kids to take part in of an evening. Also found them to be great value for money which is the most important thing! Hope that helps.

We are currently working our way back from Port Douglas to Sydney staying in Big4 parks all the way...! So far we have stayed in Cairns, Townsville, Airlie Beach, Rockhampton & Hervey Bay.

Handing over to the missus now as she'll be much better at this than me...!

Hi there.... First thing to do is to become a Big4 member; it costs $40 but gives you 10% off your stay up to $30 a stay, so you soon get your money back. They are the largest campsite group and the facilities are excellent and cater for most needs. Most sites tend to be on the outskits of the towns, right on the main highway, and close to supermarkets, etc...

For your stay you have a choice of powered or unpowered sites for Caravan and campervans, tent sites and if you are like us and with just the car, then you book youself into a cabin. Most sites have a range of these, starting from a basic ensuite cabin, to luxury spa retreat cabins. On site you will also find at most sites swimming pool, camp kitchen, bbq, laundry, tour bookings, etc. At the moment we are in Hervey bay staying in a cabin with a tennis court right next to us!

We would definitely recomend BIG4, they tend to be to a high standard, and there is also a booklet you can get that has all the Big4 sites listed in all of Australia. If you are going off the main routes, generally you will still find a Big4.

But saying everything, even if you are a Big4 member it doesn't restrict you to Big4 parks, there are plenty of choices wherever you go; once you arrive go to the RACQ office, from there you can get an accommodation book on Queensland; this tells you all accommodation in all towns from 4 star hotels to all the campsites. It also has things to see and do and maps of the larger towns.. a definite must if travelling around - cost approx $15 if I remember correctly! We did stay in a few motels when we first started out some were good, some not so good. Generally find the standard of accommodation better at the campsites, plus you have better facilities too! And cheaper...

Hope this helps...

Cheers

We're at Fraser Lodge, very close to the seafront, shops, restaurants, etc. There's another Big4 here but we haven't stayed there. This is very pleasant, we're in a 2 bed villa close to the tennis court and swimming pool. The park appears to be very popular with occupancy quite high I would say. There's also an awful lot of the grey nomads here... Loads of 60 (or more) something's with 'Cruisers and 'Vans... It's nice to be somewhere off the main highway where you can't hear the HGV's compression braking all the time... It's a 5 minute drive to the marina to go and see whales which is where we're off to this afternoon...! I would certainly recommend it...

We only spent a couple of days or so at each of these so difficult to make an opinion really. Personally I much preferred Cairns to either by a long way; thought it had a real buzz about it that lacked with these two. I know there's some residents of both here so maybe they'll pop up with support for their chosen ones...
