Even if coming for lifestyle consider what income you will need ----- me in Aus five plus years on, bigger house, bigger mortgage, bigger debts and now working travelling abroad to pay for it all, something I had the choice for in the UK.

And from a personal perspective you can f**k the free beach!

What do you mean, no long weekends?!

I couldnt give a monkies about the beach either...

The best way I can give an example is via my Daughter who moved from Aussie to the UK, with no plans to return. It has taken her two full years to move back to an income in adminstration to be anywhere near the money that she left on here. Circa 37,000 Aud at age 20 she was earning here, now she is on around 11,500 quid in London but moving upwards. (she got around this by working two jobs) The reason being she is untried and tested in the UK employment market, with no one wanting to take her on in case she moved back to Aussie, combined with not having a UK employment record. She is on the move up now, having earned her UK stripes, going for jobs around the 18,000 - 19,000 (going for junior PA work) quid mark, which is probably where she would have been if she had stayed in the Fashion industry in marketing here.

I also looked at employment opportunities for myself in the UK market, from afar. I doubt if I could get anywhere near my Aud 50,000 plus income, at Apost.
As a new migrant to the UK, aged 52, with no decent qualifications. I reckon I'd be lucky to clear 40,000 Aud (circa 16,000 quid) which would mean a 20 pct drop in my current income. Now no postie or night sorter is going to come to Aus and earn what I'm on as they have to be here with 5 yearly increments for a start, plus Apost dont take on Full timers anymore.

The reason for this is more to do with establishment in a new job market rather than anything to do with compartive rates of pay in respective countries.

I would say after 5 years here most people would be on the kind of income they would have been in the UK. The average wage across both countries is remarkably similar. Obviously there are wide variations in what people earn, IE: the WA mining industry here, and the City of London oiks in the uk for example. All in all the wage rate average overall is remarkably similar when taken across the board. I went all through this about two years ago. I think then there was a 3 pct difference which surprised the hell out of me, (especially the fact the the average American wage was in the same ball park as the UK and Aus ) the exchange rate may have actually pushed the average wage in Aussies favour. Took me about 2 hours of collating and googling last time around, but I'm sure I'm correct.

I do take the point that things are dearer here, took me a trip to the UK to belive it though.
i certainly agree with you inregards to earning your stripes .I am earning twice what i woulod earn in the uk but it took me years to get there .
Although i have never truly settled here in aussie ,i have succeeded work wise and it is certainly something i have to consider if we move back to the uk .

I heard all the stories about the Aussie laid back lifstyle, long weekend on beach etc. Never really happened for me. Husband works nights starting Sundays and I am involved in IT and payroll project management so life is one long work fest attached to laptop. I could earn more back in the UK/Europe. Will admit this is very much my work style but find I am working longer hours here along with many colleagues.

Tomorrow saturday, ones working as usual (the last job contract came back as a 6 DAY week whenever required. My job covers a 7 day week, roster can be any of those days and new workers who knock back the weekend shifts usually find they are swiftly replaced. Laid back, nope.

I now (finally) have a permanent job I enjoy, but the wages are less than I was getting in the UK four years ago, and I am expected to work longer hours. If I'm not in at 8 I got sideways looks and a lot of people telling me how long they have already been at their desks, and even on days when I say I HAVE to leave at 5 (usually its 5.30 or later) I get told I need to finish something, or cover someone's phones etc.
The Aussies seem to do quite well at sloping off for long lunches, those of us from other backgrounds try and balance this by leaving at a reasonable time, but that seems to be less acceptable

I've never experienced the alleged "lifestyle" - they all go straight home after work, there's no socialising, no nights out together drinking - I can only get 2 gorls to go drinking, and thats rare; they don't cancel cos of the kids, but cos they want to work late.

I'm now on a roster to cover the duty phone one weekend in 8. Did my first stint two weeks ago and was amazed to find that even when provided with a "work from anywhere" kit - laptop, mobile and Blackberry - the Aussies sit at home ready for the occasional call (its a quiet time of year). I went to the Bloke's family for lunch, and took the gear with me, and even operated the stuff in the car when we had storm warnings while on the way back - they seemed to think this was cheating as I carried on with my normal life while on call! Surely if you can do that, then you would?

Definitely some truth in that but depends where you work. I've worked in quite a few different industries here and some don't make the effort at all and others do. (some if they do make the effort are just too damn well behaved ) If you ever get the chance to work in fine wine they definitely know how to party!!!

Have not read all replies so excuse if someone has already covered this ....

We do not earn more than we did in the UK and I find that with the expection of food and paint (don't get me started on paint ) that most thing are cheaper , sure we now by coles/woolies own makes but that a choice we made I don't feel the need to wear designer stuff but when a sale is on I will go to Colorado and by t's as they are 10 bucks so cheaper than target .

As for the house prices I have the same size home loan here as i had in the UK 2 years ago but a bigger house with pool and more land and a decent car but unlike the UK I am 25min drive from Brisbane which IMO is a big city, but in the UK I was in Poole-Dorset which was quite a way fom London and the next 'city' was southampton which was about 45-50 mins away so I feel if I had a house 25mins away it would have been a way bigger loan.

Moving to Aus is the best thing I ever did I have no family (mum , dad etc...) here and miss them heaps but everyday the sunshines and I drive to work and see the plam trees swaying I can't stop smiling and when I get home to hear my child speak of how she see kolas and stuff in trees as if it's an everyday event is mad ...

Must go know more wine to consume

Both my husband and I earn more than we earned in the UK. Me by GBP10K and OH by GBP5K.

...but before anyone thinks I am smug....money isn't worth emigrating for!

We both earn more here. But then, we haven't worked for anyone but ourselves for the last 15 years. Being salaried? Ermmm ... no thanks.

Depending on the exchange rate 2.29 good comparison to 2.5 not as good

I earn more than I did 5 years ago when we moved.

When I compare back to what I could earn (and I had hard job offers) I am earning less and I am sitting in Manila on a Friday night in a hotel room chatting to hubby on Skype! When I used to do Europe and US for work travel.

I agree do not emigrate to Aus for Money or in my case much of a lifestyle

Good to hear all the threads on here and different opinions.

I am in the process of moving ou to oz..to Cairns. i have a sponsor who is willing to train me from graduation level (I am a mature student) in a specialised area of Sports Podiatry. In the U>K it would be impossible to find this work, I would have to do general, mundane work. The start wage is higher in Oz than I would get in the U>K and for that I get 2 years secure employment (sponsored regional visa) training, holiday pay, bank holidays off, Monday to friday working and training in a specialist area. After 3 months I can opt to go onto part salary, part commission which will double my wage..I could never earn £40,000 in England doing the same and learning at the same time.

We will be going with not a lot of money when we have paid off debts here. if we stayed in U>K we couldn't pay debts off as equity from the house would need to go into the next house..this would still mean that we would have a £180,000 mortgage for an average semi here..the mortgage for that would be £1400 a month..not affordable and too scary for me.

In Oz we will rent to start with which is affordable over there..about £500 a month for a large 4 bed detached place. We will have a huge disposable income from 2 salarys and no children so can save for a house deposit there. the interest rates on mortgage are more but the houses are cheaper..and you get more for your money so that can only be a win win situation. We can have a bigger house there near to the beach for about £1000 a month mortgage or a small semi here for £1400 a month mortgage. i know which i prefer.

Our freinds in Sydney pay £30 a month council tax on a huge 4 bed detached house..we pay £100 a month...their bills are cheaper and food seems to be a similar amount. House insurances are cheaper too.

We have no disposable income here, are always in debt and can't see a way out...unless we live in a terrace house in a not so nice area! We went to Oz, fell in love with North Queensland and the people were very freindly. They said "you're not going to be whinging poms are you?" No way. We do moan a lot in this country..and why..because we have reason to. We have no intentions of taking that with us. We want a new start and if it doesn't work it doesn't. if you don't try you will never know. We want to move from North England anyway and I have lived abroad before so know the pros and cons.

The main reasons for our move are partly to have a better disposable income but to get away from the british culture of getting into debt, youths running rampage, getting insulted because of who you are (outside your own house), getting pissed down the pub every night culture (maybe that is just where we live) , huge taxes, rising house prices, our cars getting damaged all the time, lack of respect for authority, constant rain (I know it rains a lot in cairns but at least the sun comes out in between), road rage, too much traffic and everyone being stressed out.

My partner is giving up a good, secure job here..that is our only concern. they have good skills so hopefully will be able to find something similar out there. We have gone through the "shall we, shan't we" and still do. It is a huge decision which is why we have looked at every worse case scenario. It amazes me how people move there without ever having visited the country. that is not something I could do.

No raining on your parade - just genuine interest (I did read the rest of your post)

But...personal debt here is huge, especially gambling ones if in a Pokie State!

taxes have some down here....into line with other 1st world countries in the last five years so it can compare for now, Cairns I get you on house prices compared to Main UK cities. Lack of respect....that quote is every generation repitition and we are fools to think otherwise - me included I have too seriously ungenerous teenage little blighters.

Stress.......check out you not where you move to! I have my darling hubby actually attending a counsellor now and he scoffed before that only madmen with too much money ever did this!

Sorry I sound down, I am not I actually liked your post and wish you every happiness, Cairns here you come!

When I say STRESS I mean peoples attitudes not necessarily me!!! I mean people in general..I don't know many people who are genuingly happy..nothing to do with their financial situation.

I have been offered two business here since graduating. I could easily do either but I am not leaping at them as I don't want to live here anymore. I could have a very good income but it isn'tabout money in that respect..it is about where I will feel happy. I lived in Southern Germany, wide open spaces, very green and no yobs, no traffic congestion and laid back..the total opposite to England. I know the grass can be greener. I got the same feel in Cairns..that is why I am drawn to it. I love the outdoors and havn't had that since moving back here as I am constantly working and havn't the disposable income.
