Best time or day to fly to Oz?

We're emigrating in July but haven't yet booked tickets, will probably fly Singapore Airlines. We can't afford first class tickets, but it would be nice to have the chance to stretch out a bit if the aeroplane is half-empty. Is there a less popular time of day to fly? Are some days of the week typically quieter than others?

You can always try for a mid week flight but there are no guarantees, especially with
SIA who seem to have be pretty popular.

There's another option that isnt as costly as buying first class tickets and thats to
buy 3 seats for the 2 of you. It wont get you any more legroom but you wont feel
quite so hemmed in and with luck, and a prebooked seat or early check in you can get
as aisle , middle and window seat.

If you arent stoppping over in Singapore remember there are showers in the transit
hotel where you can freshen up.

Luck has probably got a bit to do in finding an uncrowded flight.

Give Singapore Airlines a call and ask the reservations person. They're always
obliging, they can just bring up the flights on their computer screen and would
probably have a good idea of the best flight.

You will need a lot of luck to find an uncrowded flight on the Europe-Asia-Australia
routes, and your chances of getting a half empty one are not far from zero.

Not entirely true... yep the "luck" part is true, but how much luck would one need???

I've been to Australia twice now. On both returnflights we had all the room we could
wish for (We're both a bit longer (and me taller) than the average person) The trick
is to get emergency exit places...

On our last returntrip the plane was even quite empty, and we both had a row of three
seats... (not the whole flight though)

Our last flight to Australia we had some other form of "luck"... 13 days after the
twin tower attack nobody wanted to fly...

Which was bloody stupid for at least two reasons:

1. There was probably no SAFER time to fly;
2. Australia is about as far away from the land of George W. as you can get!

Thats what we figured... on the other hand... the Taliban could off course pick one
of the landmark sites of Australia ;-] imagine crashing at Uluru

anyway, the security was beefed up enourmously.

Top 5 signals your plane is a terrorist target:

5. Swarthy-looking stewardess passes out forks, spoons, and box cutters
6. Boarding pass issued by Air Taliban
7. Dinner menu offers molotov cocktails before entree
8. Flight attendant call button starts theme to "The Weakest Link" and number
one: (in Australia) 1. Pilot announces "short stopover in Woomera." (for
everyone else):
9. runway landing lights are tribal council torches

Re: Best time or day to fly to Oz?

Often emergency exit seats are reserved for mums and babies, so another trick that
works for 747's and possibly other planes is to get the seats towards the back of the
plane, where the fuselage tapers off towards the tail. At that point, the seats along
the side of the plane, go from 3 abreast, to just two. And the way they are
positioned gives you a little extra leg room. Some say it is a little more bouncy
back there, but I don't really think it's a big a problem, as being squished in the
middle of an aisle. Plus you're close to the toilets and often get served first. Oh
and you're the one of the last few to die, if the plane crashes;)

Good luck.

No, bulkhead seats are for parents and infants. Escape aisle are generally assigned
on check-in to ensure that the occupants are able-bodied and able to understand the
language of announcements; some airlines reserve them for upper-level freaky flier
categories as well.

That does not happen at all. Babies are explictly exluded from being able to sit by
emergency exits on most airlines

Yep you're right... that's my experience too. and: emergency exit seats do not have
those extra large "tables" to change dipers... those bulkhead places do have extra
room though!

Makes sense, in case of emergency save the loyal customers first ;)
