P.S. My ridiculous conclusion has come about after buying a brace of old mk1 minis 10yrs ago and seeing them transform from old throwaway junk into 'classic 60's British iconic transport', (but still more than just a little bit sh*t).
It was nostalgic fun to begin with ...
Yep, buy Jags, more money for Tata of India. Like the British motor industry it's all gone tata.

the returns on deposits or bonds are (historically) relatively low. Assuming you are leaving the pounds in the UK because 1) you don't know where you are going to end up & 2) post brexit, the pound is at 30 year lows.
Your end result will more likely be enhanced in terms of as & when you exchange pounds for another currency?.....at some point within the next 2 years the pound will rally and recover lost ground (it might even end up stronger against Euro & AUD). On this basis, your exit point/strategy will extenuate your returns not the yield/div you are likely to receive, in the holding period.....so go for the most safe/tax effective deposit/bond and focus on the FX.

Maybe buy a house and rent it out? Capital value may or may not increase but it should bring in a good monthly income and you can sell if/whenever you wish.

Mortgages are pretty hard to come by for a non resident.

That said there are plenty of studio places on the north which attract good yield and could be bought outright.

Yes and there are one or two places left further south where you can still buy a decent little 2-bed terrace/semi for 150k outright or less. We have just done so with over 6% yield.

As Beoz said, a mortgage may be difficult to obtain, but if you're only buying one house/flat you also have all your eggs in one basket. Just one bad tenant, or other unpredictable issue - bad neighbour, accident/ catastrophe (making the home difficult/ impossible to rent), etc. and all your wonderful profit disappears, only to be replaced by a headache.

True...I guess most forms of investment come with some risk or another. Always difficult to know what to do for the best. A crystal ball would come in handy... :-)

Maybe invest half up North. 10% yield up there.

Just curious. Regarding logistics, did you make the purchase from abroad?

When I was an uni I started reading the Investor's Chronicle, a weekly investment magazine, and noticed that pretty much every week one share on the London Stock Exchange, or AIM (Alternative Investment Market) doubled in value each week.

If only there had been a way to reliably identify that one share at the start of the week. By reinvesting the proceeds of the previous week's investment, starting with only £1, I could have retired comfortably after six months, or rather extravagantly after eight months.

Yes, we are in NZ at the moment. It was very straightforward..just needed to send the solicitors copies of our passports and proof of residency here.

Of course if you own a property anywhere in the world you will now pay the additional stamp duty levy in the UK for second homes don't forget!
