There aren't many... Now if you'd said Melbourne it would've been a very long thread.

A bit touristy, but I quite like The Glenmore (cumberland street?)

If we have visitors the Harbour View upstairs right next to the South end of the Bridge is good value

The Observer aint bad for Guinness.

I agree with the Glenmore. Very nice on the rooftop on a sunny day.

Sydney CBD isnt really the hub of the nightlife in the greater Sydney area. Balmain, Bondi, Newtown, Crows Nest, Surrey Hills all have good pub scenes.

If you want a proper beer though, you have to go to one of the beer cafes. Bavarian Bier cafe on York st being my favourite.

Like he said...

I like PJ O'Brien's myself - It's one of the few pubs with a bit of character. Many of the CBD pubs are hideous amalgamations of shiny tiles, chrome and poker machines, and are very sterile as a result.

That being said, there are a couple of gems if you know where to look. I partuicularly like The Arthouse on Pitt street, The Angel (also on Pitt Street) and the George on George Street.

There's probably some more too, but I can't remember them through the haze of this morning's hangover...

Pubs are something Sydney doesn't really do very well unfortunately - that does seem to be changing though with all the new small bars opening - at least there's an alternative to pokie machines, sport on at least ten televisions and plastic glasses after 10pm!

The Old Fitzroy in Wooloomooloo is definitely up there as one of my faves.. it's a great spot and does a mean bowl of laksa..

Balmain is good as is the Rocks. CBD pubs are not great although 3 monkeys and art house are not bad.

The Old Fitz is my favourite too

I used run the weekly pool comp there the first time I lived here a few years ago, got a weekly bar tab of $100 for doing it...good times.

Other good ones are The Shakespeare and The Local Taphouse

The Local is great! I will also nominate the East Sydney Hotel in Wooloomooloo - proper old style pub, no pokies, no plasmas, just good beer and pizza from the shop across the road.

I'd suggest it for a Thursday night, but the distance from the city is always a concern.
