Best places to buy a laptop in Perth.
Hi all.
We arrive in Perth in 10 days and I'll need to buy a laptop fairly soon after. Nothing special required, just the basics.
We'll be in the Northern suburbs and I was wondering where would be a good place to buy one. Preferrably somewhere where I can get some decent advice, as I am not very pc-literate.
Thanks in advance.

It will probably be cheaper to buy a laptop from wherever you stop on the way, singapore, KL etc..

We always use PLE Computers in Wangara and they've always been pretty cheap and reliable.

We have used PLE Computers at Wangara for several years too................ judging by the carpark always being full i would say they have heaps of happy customers.
They have a webpage so if you google PLE Wangara you should be right.

2GB ram
Dual Core processor 1.8Ghz
180 GB hard drive
Bluetooth - Wi Fi etc
Built in Web cam 1.3 MP
So far very good..... $920.00.
I would look at duty free in Dubai or Singapore etc also.
I used my BT modem when I 1st arrived. You will get a free modem and wirless router with an internet package here will full IT support. You will not get support or drivers for the BT modem.
Broadband packaged are crap and have download limits... so be aware, I often hit 7GB per month and get slowed down for my punishment! :-(

Re: Best places to buy a laptop in Perth.
Hi John/Wendy
Not sure the best place to buy a laptop, but if you only need until your stuff arrives I wouldn't bother ! If you're looking to buy anyway - to upgrade for example - I'd recommend buying a Mac. You could buy in the UK, their warranties cover worldwide, and so easy to use/set up and come with built in software, webcam etc, which you'll need to factor into any laptop you buy.
With regards modem, I was surprised how expensive these are over here. I brought ours, but not compatible, check if yours is on the Telstra website, under Bigpond. My wireless router is fine, just that my modem was for cable in the UK, and over here I have to have ADSL or wi-fi as no cable installed, so basically if your modem will fit one of the small phone extensions you should be fine. Most places give free modems anyway if you sign up for 24 months.
If I were you, I'd manage without buying new, you'll have so much stuff draining your finances away its probably best to manage. You could use Whitfords during day, and if you need to go on at night, you're welcome to pop around to mine (where I can tempt you into delving into the world of Apple Mac )
I never thought we'd manage without internet but did ok using internet cafe's etc.
Some more food for thought anyway!

Re: Best places to buy a laptop in Perth.
Having just seen a friend's MAC set-up (has been using Apple products for a year or so), I can say I was impressed!
With that in mind, can anyone recommend through knowledge of local stores/personal experiences on whether I should
1) buy Apple products like iMAC etc in UK & ship them over with other goods (with 7 weeks to go, not really at this unless stock availability is a major issue in the other options below) OR
2) buy them in Duty Free (which airports, what happens to GST, is there an AU $ limit on how much I can purchase in Duty Free for shipment to Perth (I will ignore the limit set by the mrs! ), Or do I have to carry everything with me onto the flights to Perth etc, etc) OR
3) buy directly in Perth (where/website?) OR
4) buy online via Apple Store in Australia
I appreciate there will be price differences from product to product in the options above but I am also looking at all this from ease of purchase, delivery/shipment, stock availability, warranties, etc perspectives - so any words of wisdom on how best to buy Apple products for use in Perth will be much appreciated.
Thanks
