Question Best place to Live in OZ

Hi I am new here..

I have just put in my registration for visa; I have been doing research on the different places that are best to live in australia;

I have heard that Canberra is a nice place to live but can be classed as quite and dull especially for the evening.
Adelade is great for nurses but along with Perth can be away and classed as secluded.
Sydney too much like London, not really interested in..
Melbourne; this was the place I was thinking about, was asking a lot of people about differnt places in Melbourne, such as Brighton, Point cook or a place called Orange (something)..

I really dont know; I dont want to live in the inner city, but dont want to be too far out where I can miss out on night life if needed/wanted a night out.
I am a single parent of three boys, so want a bit of freedom as in similar to country but again easily accessable schools. My boys are 13, 11 & 9 also really want my boys to have a life outside of the home with sports etc..

So you see I am really stuck in what to do or where to go.. I am 31, a registered Nurse so can move around with job... its just where???

thank you for reading

Valerie

I hope you were not hoping to find a consensus on what is the best place to live in Australia.

You are fortunate to have the flexibility of being able to head to any of the major cities as a nurse. We had no flexibility due to specialist nature of OH role but we are very happy here in Sydney now.

I don't know what you could mean by "Adelaide is good for nurses", however I would not put it in the same bracket as Perth in terms of being geographically isolated, it is a short hop to Melbourne and Sydney about ~2 hours.

I would be inclined to say follow your instinct and go with Melbourne, but would note that housing costs are likely to be higher here than anywhere else (bar Sydney).

Hi Valerie, I know several nurses in Melbourne so if you'd like more info on any specific area of nursing I may be able to find someone to help.

Melbourne's a great place to live for the best combination of lifestyle and city buzz in my opinion, as Bermudashorts has said property can be pretty expensive. Brighton is probably the most expensive area in Melbourne and Point Cook is one of the cheaper ones.

Enjoy doing your research!

lol no not after a consensus; (thank you for your reply Bermudashorts) just ideas of where the best kind of place that would suit myself and my children..

It was from a site about different types of living etc throughout the main cities of Australia that I was reading up on, it just mentioned about the professionalist jobs with regards to Adelaide.. My search will not end lol

That was my worry is the amount of expense it would be for living; such as renting; like where I live its not in London but on the outskirts where it is cheaper to rent.. so was looking for something similar, but with a nice family orientated feel.. I hold no reservations of places.. so just trying to gain a lot of information and personal experiences from those that have made the move and/or those that currently live in Australia..

I guess you could say I am doing my homework

Oh thankyou BB (trust me to pick the most expensive area lol)
I am currently working in A&E and would love to continue this roll.. so any and all information would be of great help

honestly.. because I am a single parent and bringing in only my wages I have to be thorughtful of where I would need to spend the monies etc... but definately dont want a built up area where eveyone is living ontop of one another, if that makes sense...

Big Squidges (hugs) thank you xx

Have a browse through the threads in this forum and you'll find that most of the cities - including Adelaide - have been discussed for their relative living costs as well as for the differences between suburbs so that might help a bit

What about the childrens father? If he's in the UK and the children are living in Australia, whichever city.... hmmm. Sorry, not knowing your circumstances.

I think the point Ed was trying to make, was that if the father of your children has parental rights, or you were married before he left, then you would need his permission to take the children out of the country, regardless of whether you're now a single parent or not, and furthermore if you were to remove them without his permission, then you would be breaking the law which could have a detrimental impact on your visa application and/or you're PR status in years to come.

On a different note, maybe you should take the time to track him down anyway, for your kids sake before you leave the country. I have a son, that I never see because his mother has always discouraged it, and I have no parental rights, but I know that I would be absolutely furious to "just find out" rather than being told. Aside from that, there might be a day, one day just maybe, when you're kids ask "Where can I find my Dad...?" I would certainly hope my son would ask eventually....

Just a thought....

I appreciate what you are saying.. no I was never married to him, I do have sole parental rights with my children, I did track him down, I asked him to be a father as my kids needed one; he saw them once, another 5yrs has gone by and never seen him since and I have never moved..

I always hold onto the fact that my boys will ask, they did a lot when was younger, I have nothing to hide from them; thankfully we do have an open relationship with each other; although the teen years are coming lol

Go for Canberra - it's only as dull as you want it to be, there is plenty to do if you go out and look for it. And we need nurses apparently!

However, it is expensive and rental accommodation is hard to come by especially at some times of the year. It is also a tad chilly in winter but you can see the snow from town in winter which is kind of cool. Facilities wise we are second to none, there is a strong choice of education - public and private, we are close enough to Sydney to go for the day if you need urban sprawl and expensive shops in your life, and we have 4 seasons, what more could you want?

Australian cities really only started growing after the second world war with the influx of immigrants from Europe, so close in to the CBD of most cities (certainly Adelaide and Brisbane, and a bit further out for Sydney and Melbourne) the houses were mainly built on the traditional quarter acre block. Many of these have now been subdivided but plenty remain, giving large back yards for the kids to play in.

The point is that in these older areas you are not 'living on top of one another' in the way you are in equivalent areas of the UK. However the newer outer suburbs are just like UK housing developments (except that the majority of the houses are single storey) with minimal yard space.

If you want to work in A&E (Accident and Emergency, right?) then you will probably be restricted to the major hospitals in the cities as many of the smaller hospitals (and virtually all the private ones) don't have an A&E department.

Think about looking outside of the major cities if you want a cheaper place to live. I'm about 30k South of Wollongong and while it may not have all the 'bling' of Sydney, for quality of life, particularly for young families, it knocks Sydney on its backside.

Good for you to be brave enough to try Oz, you will no doubt make lots of new friends and your children with thrive. I love Brisbane, some here hate the place. Couldn't do Melbourne due to the weather, Sydney to me is London by the sea, Adelaide is not for me and Perth is too far from anywhere...

You watch though there will be tons on here that disagree, it really is a personal choice. good luck on wherever you decide to call home.

to be honest I have decided for Brisbane, although the thoughts of termites and mozzies.. shivers lol... but I have spoken to some nurses who I work with and have stated that their friends who have moved out to there have thrived; also great for the kids.. oh and my milk bottle legs certainly do need a bit of colour and not from the bottle as I do at present (cough: did I say that out loud lol)

well if no A&E I guess I will have to go back to Cardiac..

Someone did suggest Bardon; didnt realise it was so hard to move...
