Best month to move from the UK?

Re: Best month to move from the UK?
Cheers! We'd be looking at going to Melbourne,
would December/January be too late do you think?
I was just thinking we could go round to see all the family and say goodbye whilst doing the xmas run that way...
but early november would probably be the next best thing
Thanks!!!
I can't wait to get over there (finally!)

We moved in July. It was a bit odd to leave sunny UK and arrive into dreary rain. I had to buy a coat when I got here as other than a rain mac which was not thick enough, my coats were in the container.
It is nice now, I think Sept / Oct are good months. I am hoping I will build up some tolerance to the sun gradually before summer gets here.

Second Saturday in November in Victoria for the last 5 years. (I remember these as it is our town show weekend and I'm involved in it.
2005 - 37
2006 - 19 and rain
2007 - 27
2008 - 16
2009 - about 5 million degrees (but near to zero and fog early on)
This can happen just about any time of year hear.

I would def suggest September. It's just starting to get better weather, you go from one summer to pretty much another, with about 7 months or so of really good weather. Eases you in to the really hot days (the first 40+ is still a shock).
Def don't come in Ausies Winter, two winters on the trot is going to upset you.
I also wouldn't come Jan/Feb - hottest months, and soon cools down in March/April so you may feel cheated out of some nice long good weather.
We live in perth. Not sure what the other cities are like.

If you leave after a UK winter, there's no way you're going to suffer with an Australian winter, it would be positively balmy by comparison.

Why's everyone going on about the weather. Any weather here is better than the uk
Here there are tax thresholds. Tax rates 2010–11 for PR people
Taxable income
Tax on this income
0 – $6,000
Nil
$6,001 – $37,000
15c for each $1 over $6,000
$37,001 – $80,000
$4,650 plus 30c for each $1 over $37,000
$80,001 – $180,000
$17,550 plus 37c for each $1 over $80,000
$180,001 and over
$54,550 plus 45c for each $1 over $180,000.
For non res (457 etc) rates are:
Taxable income
Tax on this income
0 – $37,000
29c for each $1
$37,001 – $80,000
$10,730 plus 30c for each $1 over $37,000
$80,001 – $180,000
$23,630 plus 37c for each $1 over $80,000
$180,001 and over
$60,630 plus 45c for each $1 over $180,000
So I would take that into account and come between when you can earn just below the most realistic amount and the end June (end of the Oz tax year).
So for someone with PR you come in Jan time. You earn 80k/12 = 6.6k per month. You pay 0% on 1st month (6k) and 15% on the rest (33.6k) = 5k. So $5k tax bill and then your yr starts again. Basically you get to enjoy the lower tax rate for an additional 6 months.
All this obviously depends on your income but you will be glad you did this when doing your tax return. I'm not saying this should be the sole reason for coming here at a certain time but as good a reason as the weather
p.s I've had a bottle of red so if my figures are out blame dan murphy cleanskins. Should catch my drift. Makes bigger difference if you have PR and maybe thats why its not mentioned much

We came out on a temp visa and I realise you're talking about someone on PR above, but OH was taxed as if he'd been earning the same amount all year, which meant we had a great tax rebate the first year.

Re: Best month to move from the UK?
Visa status and tax residency are not the same thing. A 457 holder would be taxed in the same way as a PR holder (excepting for things such as LAFHA) other than a temporary visa holder is not necessarily taxed on all overseas income.

Oh okay. Got that bit wrong.
So its better to come half way through the year for everyone

Re: Best month to move from the UK?
I probably wouldn't base my decision on tax at all to be honest. However if somebody moved a few months into the UK tax year then most of the personal allowance would be unused so they should get a reasonable rebate when they leave which would be a bit of a bonus.

Its amazing how no one seems to mention this. I'd rather have $10k in my pocket in 1st yr of arriving than with tax man.

Re: Best month to move from the UK?
thanks everyone... think i'm going to apply for the visa in March - that way it should be here in time for autumn so we can go in oct/nov...
and if I leave it til March i'm guessing it's going to take a month or two to be approved and I think we have 12 months to move once approved - so if for some reason things don't go to plan (do they ever!) we can delay the move until March/April without being charged to apply again...
I'm thinking that's the best course of action anyhow
thanks!

Re: Best month to move from the UK?
Sorry, the company I own is going to sponsor me to start the Australia branch next year. There looks like there's a good market over there for us to tap into and the Uk business is growing and thriving so it should be able to fund me to go and expand there... it's all exciting

It can be done remotely luckily so we can keep the UK branch running once we've made the move and try to set up in Melbourne.
