When to arrive, depends entirely on where you are going, we arrived in melbourne just prior to winter, it was so depressing, grey damp and cold,
unheated murky rental, 3 months later we moved to queensland, absolutely fantastic in comparisom.

Queensland I would not arrive in dec/jan its big tourist season everythings packed, expensive or closed, and the weathers not the best for running around trying to organise everything. Perth would not arrive summer or winter both too extreme. Cairns wet seasons jan or feb that would be a nightmare, adelaide boils in summer.

Given the amount of stress/orgainsing when you first arrive its worth thinking about.
