Default Best flea/tick/worm preventative for dogs?

What is the best kind of flea/tick/worm preventative for dogs here in Australia? We got a Frontline flea/tick spot treatment in Derek's puppy pack but upon reading it it only offers 2 weeks of tick protection, which isn't very good. Any other recommendations? Also any websites where you can buy in bulk and save?

I use 'comfortus' tablets for flea protection. They last a month at a time. Found the protection to be much better than the various liquids you can put on (frontline etc).

For ticks I use tick collars during the tick season.

I use frontline and heartguard plus on my boxer. I find them both to be excellent. Can't remember what I used when they were pups. Buy from
www.aussievetproducts.com.au I checked and they are cheaper than the other site mentioned. They both last a month. I believe you can get an injection from the vet that lasts a year but it isn't a hassle doing it once a month.

We used to use Frontline in the uk, but the vet in QLD said Advantix was better...Guess its personal choice or he makes more from Advantix?!? We've found it to be a little less greasy than frontline, but maybe thats the warmer weather? We get it from ebay, usually about $62 for 6 vials for over 25kg dogs.

Also apparently shampoo with tea tree oil can help repel insects

Edit: you only need to use it fortnightly in tick season (speak to the vet for dates)

Our Saint Bernard died about a year ago, and this week we finally took the plunge and adopted an 18 mth old Basset Hound to fill the gap. I went down the pet store yesterday and asked for 3 months of flea tablets and some anti-worm treatments - "that'll be $170 please" she said - I just laughed and walked out. How can they charge so much ? I'll be shopping online.

We are in acres of lush queensland bushland, the only thing we have found to work is advantix. Like any of the potions not cheap, but it works. It doubles up as a great flea treatment too. Again only product we have found to work.

In summer used with a a tic collar, the green box sorry dont remember the name, but it does the paralasis tic, usually bought from agricultural store about $9 , all costs much more in pet shops, they are a rip off.

Still give the daily check over of the dogs too.

Would much rather do all this than get the vets bill for trying to save a dog, it cost a neighbour $3000.

Be careful using anything with tea tree oil on dogs - it can be toxic.

I feed our boxer a yeast tablet periodically (ie when I remember). Apparently changes the "flavour" of their blood and ticks/fleas etc wont bite them. Have been doing it for years on both dogs and cats and seems to work.

Just checked out the site you suggested and I would save $10 on the two items I usually order so thanks for the link!

when I was in oz i used Revolution worm and flea drops for my cat, it also works on dogs - there's a dog version too.

it's outrageously expensive at the vet, but you can get it cheaper on ebay- from local Aussie sellers too.

Health food store - it is actually a human supplement. Current is "Brewers Yeast 500mg" by Thompsons.

And unlike most tablets for some reason our dogs and cats have always just eaten these out of our hands - not the usual hide in the food game
