Hi Audrey426,

Welcome to the forum. If you want a variety in the weather I think somewhere like Melbourne or Adelaide would give this - have never been to either so can't really comment on them as a place.

However, everyone is different and they do say that you get climatised after a while so if you really fancy Brisbane then go for it, you can always move around at a later date. Having said that I am biased towards Brisbane coz that's where we're heading!!

Take care.

Adelaide may have four seasons but summer in is ferocious, last year they had over 10 days in excess of 35C from memory, when we lived there in the summer there was regular powercuts with the grid becoming overloaded by airconditioners running day and night.

Melbourne still gets pretty hot, but maybe less than Adelaide, both have been in drought though, ie sustained drought for several years and permanent water restrictions apply.

Perth is similar to Adelaide, Brisbane is warm and humid most of the year. Sydney has both heat and to a lesser extent than Brisbane humidity. Hobart is the coolest city weatherwise but has less employment opportunities.

Check the weather site bom.gov.au for climate statistics.

If heat is a major factor maybe Canada or NZ would be a better option.

Na, went to NZ last year, stunning but Salary no so good with 3 kids to support Canada, my mother in law from hell,s sister is there, so she frquently visits her, and would land on us (90% reason were emigrating is to escape her! ) ! She doesnt "do long haul"
While on subject, when we get our permanent visa for OZ does that mean we can be residents of NZ should we choose?

Sounds good to me!!

Don't think Auz residency entitles you to NZ residency - don't quote me though! Just know someone who is applying for NZ - different application etc., so wouldn't have thought so.

Perth!

Seriously Perth is a good choice (in my opinion) Weather isnt as "sticky" as brisbane. Job opportunities are better. And its cheaper to fly to SE Asia for hols (but more expensive to fly to UK ).

I'm totally biased I admit - and summer in Perth when it gets above 40 C is tough or winter when it get below 10 C is also tough once you become accliamatised (bring all your jumpers) - but the pluses definately outweigh the minuses.

Given that your partner is a Civil Engineer, he can earn at least $100 per hour in Perth (thats about $200K pa, or about 85k GBP) - oil&gas or mining industry only, and preferably with an EPCM, - so why wouldnt you do Perth for a few years?

Yes.

Australia is one of the "visa free" countries for New Zealand. http://www.newzealandnow.govt.nz/lis...tries~128.html

Hi,

His line is more roads/construction etc (currently contracts manager, in a small local company), a salary like that would be very good.........but no so sure in the construction side he has ten plus years experience.

On the project I'm currently working on (oil&gas onshore) our contracts engineers are on about A$90-A$100 ph. We have 14 contracts people on my project working on everything from services (medical, janitorial, catering, scafolding etc) to mechanical works, electrical works, civil works and earthworks.

TBH contracts is contracts and if he can do roads and construction there will always be a job for him in either mining or oil&gas, especially if he is prepared to do site work.

PM me you want more details, or send me his CV [email protected] and I will put it forward to my company - we are currently looking for about 10 contracts people (some perth based, some site based) so he should have a good chance (we have 7 projects currently running and they are all struggling to get good contracts people, plus one of my friends runs his own recruitment agency specialising in contracts staff - he has major links to Rio Tinto as well as BHP and Woodside).
