I don't live there, have only researched, but it seems the inner east is considered good but expensive. Perhaps going further south-east is the best option for outer suburbs? (I'm not sure.)

This is a difficult question to answer. It depends on what standard you’re
accustomed to and how much you have to spend. This might also depend on whether you
want the convenience of living near the city. If you intend purchasing and money is
of little concern you might try Armadale, Hawthorn, Kew, Glen Iris, Camberwell,
Balwyn, Canterbury and Malvern (all within about 12 kms of the city). Toorak is the
most exclusive/expensive suburb in Melbourne.
Have a look at these sites and the prices you’d expect to pay (bearing in mind
that most of the properties in these areas will sell by auction:
