Lots of things above I agree with.
Yes, you may well have 'ex-pat' mentality - a lot of people back home really aren't interested in life abroad (and was the same with Aussie people when I lived in Indonesia).
Yes, people will expect you to fit in with them and hire a car - spend hours on motorways - one summer I think I crossed the Severn Bridge 14 times!!
BUT, there is nothing like a Northern Hemisphere Christmas especially if you can afford to do a side trip as someone mentioned. It will never feel like Christmas to me on this side of the world.
As Jad&Rich said, I am one of those who needs the trip back home every year to look forward to. We added to our Christmas in Wales with a week in Newcastleton with a load of friends for new year, we don't have a 'gang' here and it just doesn't feel like home.
