North East Victoria is beautiful. Possibly the most lovely area I have seen in Australia. A little town called Bright is very pretty, especially in autumn. You could also stop at Chiltern or Echuca. There are plenty of lovely spots along the Murray River and a trip in a paddle steamer would be fun if your kids aren't too little. There are some very pretty wineries in the North East too. Rutherglen comes to mind and you can pick up a wonderful Tokay. If you are looking for more coastal than country, my other pick in Victoria would be to head south of Melbourne. I particularly liked Sorrento and Portsea.

Apollo Bay area, and along the Great Ocean Road generally would be up there with the north east mountains as the most spectacular place in Victoria scenery wise. The Grampians National park in the west of the state is also up there.

Halls Gap in the Grampians takes some beating for me.

Wilsons Prom is one of my favourite places in Victoria. An easy day trip from Dandenong or if you are a bit more adventerous you could camp down there for a few days.

The Bass Coast & Phillip Island also has some lovely beaches & scenery. Inverloch has one of the safest beaches for kids around and the coastal route between Inverloch and Cape Pattison has some great hidden beaches and views.

I also really liked Melbourne Zoo's butterfly house. If you're lucky, they land on you.
