Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
Hi there
I watched the show today and loved it as we have our visa app in and just waiting now. I totally understand the emotion as I lost my sister to cancer 8 years ago aged 38 and we will have to leave her kids behind (all older now in their late teens and early 20's) but a wrench all the same. They are one of the main reasons we have not done it sooner and now we have the problem that our own kids are older and two of them cannot come on our visa but we will get them out there somehow and you never know my nieces and nephew may want to come too. I thought today's show was the best for our situation and found a lot of it really interesting and useful. We are looking to go to the sunshine coast, having visited in November and loved it. Good luck to all Nicky |
Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
I really enjoyed todays show too. A lovely family who hit the nail on the head with the only living life once and doing what is right for 'your' family. Reading the posts here today it is clear it has really given people confirmation that we arent necessarily selffish in our aspirations for our kids.
One final point! Parents in law are wonderful :D so supportive and it was their comments that really hit home to me, 'dont feel selffish'. What wonderful people, i wish they were mine :D |
Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
Hi there
I thought they were great too and have just the right sort of attitude. I don't think it is easy for anybody in any situation. I myself don't have much family just a ton of older kids, not all my own, but my husbands mum is appearing to be OK with it but makes several remarks that make you realise she doesn't really mean it. I do understand but if we don't do it now we never will. I do honestly get cases of the colly wobbles though!! Nicky |
Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under

Still can't suss out though the differnce in the properties the BBC rent out for them???? It hardly seems fair when the ones in Perth had a 4 bedroomed with a lovely pool, then the ones today a crappy wooden thing?????? which didn't seem to be anywhere near the coast, which they'd opted for!!!!!! |

Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
Hello!
Can someone please tell me the suburbs in Brisbane that the properties in todays show were in? Thanks! |
Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
Hi all
Dont suppose there is anyone out there who taped todays programme about Queensland as I did tape it but I accidentally wiped it off my Sky+ box before viewing it:mad: If anyone has a copy do please contact me and I will reimburse postage to send it to me. Thanks Janet Rutledge |

Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
I, and my family, are making a move to Perth. I fly on the 9th of Feb and start my new job shortly after. The move was made easy by my company sponsoring the move from a visa and relocatoin point of view, but what of the other things that made the decision easy?
The climate, friendly and positive people, sensible cost of living and the great attitude towards the value of life itself. All of these things make the decision to move away from the UK so much easier. As the move comes closer I must admit that nerves are starting, but mostly to do with starting a new job and not to do with moving country. Anyway, the program gave me some information that may prove useful, I think it would have been good if the BBC could have produced a web page for the show itslef so that some of the information, such as where was that rental accommodation on the Perth show? At that price it was a great deal - does anyone have the details? All the best John |
Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
Hello (from down under),
BBC - wanted down under - 2 of the 4 Brisbane homes shown in the documentary are my homes. You can view photos of the homes on our website www.familyfriendlyhomes.com.au My homes are on the Northside of Brisbane, Bridgeman Downs & McDowall. You can view the suburbs on the map www.whereis.com.au It was just so great to be involved with the BBC. I haven't see any of the episodes as I don't have access to British TV. All the best to those choosing to move to Brisbane. You won't regret it, about 90% of our guests are UK migrants and they just love it once they have settled in. They all say it is just crazy for the first couple of weeks getting everything sorted. Don't be frightened about getting a job, virtually all our guests have a job within a week or two of arrival. Prepare yourself for our rental shortage though. Consider buying a home in Brisbane sooner rather than later, I believe we are set for a Brisbane property market boom in 2008 (we are property developers and watch the market very carefully). Our Public schools are fantastic here, your kids will get a great education (our 3 children are in the public system). The sun is shining today, the kids are talking about heading off down to the swimming pool. Life is great! Kindest of regards (from down under) Karen  |

Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
From what I have been told Perth is already in a bit of a proerty boom at the moment, but renting is still reasonable I understand. If anyone knows of any homes in the Perth area that are available for rent (for a family of 4) then please let me know - all information is much appreciated.

Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
Another property boom? It depends who you believe or where your interests lie I guess.

ROLE ON OZ:thumbup: Hi Gacie? Thankyou for your post, I dont know if carpenters would be on the same wage as carpet fitters, but I am sure someone on this site maybe able to help you with the answer. I was very surprised at how much carpet fitters can earn as you think that there would not be much call for carpets in Oz. Good luck with the move our medicals have just gone to Oz today so fingers crossed everything will be ok with them, we started the process last Jan and are now on the final stages you sometimes feel like it is never going to happen then suddenly your called for your meds, keep plugging on. Take care Sarahx |

Hi All...this message is for Sarah...
I watched the show the other day and have just moved from Brisbane to London for a short while. I loved my stay in Brisbane and I miss it very much, especially now after seeing the show. I am sure you and your family will be very happy there! I was also wondering, they showed you a property in a gated community with a swimming pool...do you remember what the area was called? When my husband and I were there, we rented a flat right in the city, but are interested in moving there to raise a family and would like to buy a house. I really liked that house they showed you and if I remember correctly it was not too far from the city....? Do you remember which property I am refering to?? Diana |

Good luck Richard & Tammy Hiya Richard & Tammy We have been to oz b4 and also have family out there, we have also done about 6 years of research, and no I can honestly say in my opinion 1 week is not enougth time for you to make a HUGE & FINANCIAL DECISION to move to Oz Take care Sarahx |
Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
I know when I used to work for Carpetright (or Carpetwise as it was in Scotland) many years ago, our fitters were paid £1.50 a sq yard (or was it a sq mtr ?? can`t remember!!)and a good fitter with straightforward lays could make a very good living. However most of them ended up with knackered knees & such, so it wasn`t the sort of job you could do at a hectic pace up til you retired. It`s not as easy as it looks.:)

Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
HI,
My OH is a carpet fitter just like Sarah's hubby. I found the show very interesting and thought the Jones family were great. We're hoping to be off to Oz later this year. I just wanted to add that carpet fitters work VERY hard and deserve every penny they earn - despite what some on this site say. I'll be looking forward to the rest of the series and wish all the families good luck with the move! Tasha  |

Re: BBC - Wanted Down Under
Hya Sarah
I saw your family on Wanted Down under and although I would have chosen the country option thought that Brisbane looked FANTASTIC, which is a shame as Ive got state sponsorship from Victoria - but sure Ill go there on my holidays. Also like Pollyanna, Im getting mallets down from the loft and practising banging down my carpets for that salary. Im a hairdresser and obviously DYING to go to Melbourne for $20 per hour (honestly theyd pay child chimney sweepers more!) have also sent off our medicals so are hoping to go soon like you. The best of luck with your visa Louise |
