Who are these undefined "our" people? Your Mother is Yugoslavian is she not one of those who've stolen all the £5 an hour jobs? Or is that just exclusive to Polish people? All sounds a tad racist if you ask me? Lets see how you get on being an immigrant in "other" nationals own country. I hope for your sake you do like it as you're pinning all your hopes on it! not everywhere is the same in the uk, I live in the best partof the uk by the beach the jurassic coast, AND near me canford cliffs is one of the richest places in the world to live.....i am not moving somewhere else in the uk, as no where is as nice as the southcoast!!!.....unfortunatley expensive too.for me tobe able to live in oz by a beach for cheaper than i could here sure i willmove....... regarding my mum being yugoslavian and one of the people who have stolen the £5 hr jobs ..I take offence to this..my poor dear mum passed away 7 years ago, and i havefound it hard to live with out her she wont see my kids grow up, thats one reason i am moving a new start.Idont have anything left here for me to stay. I am not against polish people at all i said they are hard workers but and a big but if you couldnt find a job because they sack all theenglish people to take onpolish that is not right......tony blairshouldntlet this happen...you soundrasistt bringing my mum into the polish thing when she is dead... you are as spiteful person you would be better ofhere in the uk.Dontbother posting a responce i dont want to waistmy limited energy onyou no more |

Ive only skimmed through the last few days posts in this thread, but many people have told you to be more realistic. I gave you info on carpenters wages, info you were really happy with so I would also say this.
With a family of 6 I doubt australia will be cheaper for you. Here you pay for all sorts of things medical for kids, prescriptions, dental, braces, specialists........ Food is not cheap, housing is not cheap compared to the wages, only compared to a stack of UK equity (money you have made from your UK house and the strong UK currency when you convert it). You also pay for a lot of things education wise, aussies are cracking up at the mo, at what some state schools (supposidly free education) are demanding. Petrol is cheaper in aus, if your partners a chippie, its most likely he will work great distances which are considered normal here, we think nothing of sending our tradesmen to jobs 150klm away, they pay for the petrol, doing a 1000 klms a week is nothing at all. Plus I think I explained chippies wages are not regular its all contract to contract, Be prepared to compete with a lot of other licenced and experienced men for jobs. You have 6 people in your family I would also cost up airfares, we recently had to go to UK twice in a year, for the 2 trips for just 4 of us cost $19,000, thats just airfares, cheapo airlines at that:  I think with a family your size it would be well worth checking if it is as fantatic as you think, but dont get sucked in by the big car/boat/house mode. Think what life will be like 6 months on in aussie dollars, when working in some godawful temperature, doing the same old house/kids/work routine but quite possibly on less money or with no family backup, thats when you know if you like australia or not. My husband has been offered jobs here for £8.50 ph minus tax,no decent job oppertunities where we live in one of the most expensive areas of the uk.Our mortgage is crazy. Hen has been already been offered jobs twice that in oz. What ever in oz that becomes repetative as life is, like going to the same shops or school or whatever, is the same as now so big deal.things cost money likemedicals etc but i payall that here.... I am not going out there for a boat a pool a starry eyed view, i am going out there because i think the children are better behaved something for my kids to aspire to........No good telling me the kids there are just as bad, i know enough people to tell me otherwise. I know we can get a better property than we have here with a decent size garden. And the sunshine we do not have here. |

can i ask when you all left the uk however many years ago what was the deciding factor for going then?
why were you leaving and what in your life has changed thats made you decide to stay. didnt most of you feel the way us lot in the uk are feeling we want to get off the roundabout of work bills work more bills and actually do a little living. were going for the better quality of life the time we can spend together as a family, not the big house boat and car routine. yes we all know its starting again and its good to hear there are positive and negative sides to going but at the end of the day its all down to individual circumstances and needs if you want it that badly you can make it work. by the way were a family of 8 and i know it wont be cheaper things will work out probably around the same in the end what you dont pay as much for one thing you will for another. oh is a plumber gasfitter working 60 hours per week at least im working for bt yes both good wages but no quality of life its a choice isnt it not as good money but better quality of life which would appeal to you more? im off to oz if i never try i will never know ive tried this way of life for the last 38 years it isnt going to get any better in uk believe me so now im willing to try another type of life and good luck to me i say lesley lesley |

OK, Mods hat firmly on head. Please try and keep the personal sniping out of the forum, and try and keep this thread on topic. Its an on-going show, and I don't want to have to stop the discussion. The programme can be discussed from both viewpoints - those who have not lived here yet, AND those of us that are living the life for real. Lets try and keep it balanced, and related to the programme.
If you want to discuss other stuff, like plumbers wages, or why some of us would love to move back to the UK (and the reasons why we can't just pack up and go) then please start another thread. Thanks This message was authorised by the British Expats Govt, USA. (tongue in cheek swipe at Aussie kr*p TV there for those of you still in the UK and therefore confused :p ) |

Friday - The Patel family from Luton is contemplating breaking away from close family and friends to start a new life in Australia. To help them make this massive decision, they're putting the lifestyle in Perth to the test for one week, before voting on whether a future on the other side of the world is really for them.
