Basic costs for Brisbane living ?
 

I am trying to compare the basic living costs between Auckland & Brisbane.

Can someone in Brisbane please tell me their costings versus Auckland ones below.


My expenses for 3 Bedroom House on 600m2 section (in Aussie dollars / per month)

1) Land Rates $95
2) Power $85
3) Gas $21
4) Phone $39
5) Insurance (home / contents) $75
6) Food (2 adults) $415
7) Car Rego (2 litre car) $18

but per month .....

salaries are generally better in Oz.
the standard of living is supposedly better here. UN has us 7 in the world
NZ is a fair bit lower but the lifestyle here may be different...... a long
drive to the beach?
humidity is worse than Auckland
You left out fuel! 85 cents currently/;itre and you drive further
food is an unknown quantity but i think food prices are similar or a little
cheaper except for canned food and meat - they are significantly cheaper
here. fish is expensive 10 to 30 per kilo.
rates depend entirely on area - good areas will be dearer - do you live in
takapuna or remuera? they are dearer here IMHO
Power cheaper = 75 but no gas! (you dont use much heating)
phone without internet 40
internet 56 k 30 per month plus 25 cents per call
house insurance 100
Rego 540 per year
car insurance 50
bus to city equivalent distance = north shore - downtown is 3.80 one way.
health insurance is dearer
ambulance service is subscribed 10 dollars?
pensions need looking at.
no dole for 2 years
probably more of a target for terrorists than NZ
sun cancer larger problem
No cleansacks => huge wheelie bins
dentists poisonously expensive

I know it’s tricky to compare things like mortgages / rates because of all the variables, this is why I only wanted the basic costs.

My rates are for a 600m2 section in Botany Downs / Howick, valued @ $105,000 NZD.

I own a humble brick & tile 3 bedroom house (158m2) which was valued last week @ $318,000 !!! ($270,000 AUD). Do you think I would get similar in nice suburb of Brisbane for this ???

What does Auckland have that Brisbane doesn’t ????

12% increase in crime in the last year.
A murder every week
A handful of good schools
Absurd political correctness
The worlds worst drivers
Shitty weather for 9 months of the year
Over inflated house prices
Hospital overcrowding
Pathetic public transport

Would any Aucklanders like to disagree ???

I am a born & bred Aucklander who is now ashamed to call this place home.

Most of the things you have described are actually same in Brisbane! . Could still get a good house for 300, but anything within 10 k of the city is going up fast. Land is a problem plots cost 150 easily now, and in short supply. Further out (Logan etc in the middle of nowhere, and high crime much cheaper.) Cheap always has a disadvantage. Weather is debatale, Summer here is same as Bangkok or Singapore, hot and very humid nothing pleasant about it. Obviously some wiil enjoy the humidity here but Ive yeat to meet anyone. You could easily fly from Auckalnd to Bris for 500 bucks, why not try it out in mid summer and see if its for you?

It is a tricky question to ask but if you go to
http://www.realestate.com.au/ and search
for Brisbane suburbs of
Warner, Bray Park, Everton Hills, McDowall and Brendale for instance you
will find some very nice homes that are indicative of the area and in the
price range of approximately 210 to 230K, if you want to be closer to the
city still then have a look at Auchenflower, Toowong and Milton areas where
you will find some very nice homes in the 275 to 295K range. Obviously as a
general rule (but not always the case) the closer to the city the more you
can expect to pay, this is the case with many larger cities obviously.
These are indicative only but may give you an idea, in addition there are
some nice developments further north still but well within city commuting
distance where you can purchase very nice new homes at or below the 200K
mark.
I read a thread where the author indicated the summer in Brisbane is the
same as that of Hong Kong and Singapore, this is utter rubbish, yes there is
humidity but no where near that of Hong Kong, if this concerns you maybe you
should be looking at some of the seaside locations or even the Gold Coast
which is within 50 minutes driving (to the city) or 70 mins by train and you
can by very nice new 4 bed homes on nice blocks dble garage etc etc for
220K. Logan is an example of where not to go but it is one of the worst
places of course but it is far from indicative of Brisbane. I hope this is
of some help to you.

I'm in a northern suburb of Brisbane... Redcliffe, but I own land in Pine, also North. Just paid my yearly rates which were 1200.

Ahh NZ sounds cheap :)

At the moment I am renting while my house is being built, so I only have content insurance, which costs me 150 a year.

Food - 2 adults in our house too..plus two cats, so cat food is in our shopping bill - normally comes to 150 a week, not including daily "pop outs".. like milk, bread and beer:) during the week. ... this is the only one on your list I can see which seem s to be a lot more than I pay,.. (415, sh*t girl/boy ... what are you eating? caviar :) ... that seems very high to me for 2 adults)
Everything else seems cheaper in Kiwi land :), but I suppose it depends on the wages too.

Have a look at Deception Bay (north of Redcliffe) Redcliffe has become quite
expensive in relative terms, parts pf the newer areas surrounding Aspley,
Narangba I am always on the lookout as I see these areas developing at a
stronger rate than many and you can still get into the market in a nice 4
bed near new or new house under 200K.

There's also a new city being built in the south west called Springfield http://www.springfieldlakes.com.au/ with a new motorway being built and a future train line. I wouldn't say all of Logan City is a place to avoid. The Logan Suburb of Rochedale Sth has the highest Kiwi population in metro Brisbane. Any Logan suburb east of the freeway (Pacific Motorway) is an established, nice place to live with great shopping. A new busway is currently being extended to Logan City along the freeway which will offer fast commutes to the CBD. The freeway trip by car is only about 20 minutes from Springwood. Maps are available on wheris.com.au. On the west side of the freeway houses are very very cheap, but crime etc increases. New suburbs in the SW of Logan like Park Ridge, Regents Park etc are clean and new, and close to a major shopping centre (Grand Plaza). House prices there are not cheap but not as expensive as some places in Brisbane. Be careful of overprices suburbs which rely on the suburb name to keep prices elevated. New Calamvale homes were sold about 5 years ago for $160K, and about a year later were valued at $120k once people saw that even though the suburb had a prestegious name, the homes were all small and had little land.

If you choose to live in the western suburbs you will experience temps up to 5 degrees hotter in summer than those in the eastern bayside suburbs. Winter night temps are up to 5 degrees colder in the west too, although winter days are far nicer in the west. You will also pay for those sea breezes. Some Brisbane suburbs should be avoided. Inala and Darra have large racial and heroin problems. You should also realize that rates differ in each of the cities in the Brisbane metro area, as do local laws. Brisbane has fines for smoking open fires and dogs that bark for more than 6 minutes in an hour. I would avoid Milton until they figure out what they are going to do to solve the traffic problems in that area - property resumptions etc.

What does Brisbane have that is worse than Auckland? Drivers! At least Aucklanders don't panic and STOP on on-ramps! As for political correctness, you haven't seen anything yet. Our Anti-Discrimination Commisioner recently told a bunch of white men at a local university who complained that they were excluded from every bursary to "get over it boys". She also stated that equality doesn't mean treating everyone equally!
