welcome to "the world of Australian Banks" :)

Seriously! - Given half the chance the banks in Australia will charge you a fee for looking at them!

This is a no 1 gripe among most people in Australia "Bank fees"

I'm with WestPac Bank ... which is no better than the Commonwealth bank.

It's totally mad - the fees and charges that most banks will hit you with..... a tip look at the different accounts which the bank has to offer. My account, if I don't use the ATM too much has no fees at all, but it's only because I have over a certain amount of money in my account.

Cheers

I think that Commonwealth will drop the monthly fee if you have a certain amount of savings too.

Also, I believe that 'credit unions' are supposedly 'cheaper' than banks, but don't know anything about them (yet).

Re: Banking

check www.bankchoice.com.au - they have good comparison of different banking products.

Re: Banking

I'd rather go for HSBC. They are more service oriented and charge less service fees.

I think the only difference is HSBC requires a slightly higher opening
deposit amount.

Re: Banking

We've been through this issue many times in this forum. Search through the old messages and you'll find your answer.

I've already been through the process of finding an Australian bank account. I was shocked at all the charges. Commonwealth is a complete rip off and anyone who banks with them is a financial retard. I went with HSBC - no charges and high interest (4%) on current account.

My sister has her account with a credit union as its much cheaper. Don't know the
name of it, but I'll find out & keep you posted.

I've gone with HSBC as well. They seem very good and no charges with the online account.
