Question Bank Statements - take or not to take?

Hi, I'm just slogging my way through our paperwork and have a mountain of bank statements. Do I need to take old bank statements with me? If so, going back how far? Will I need them to get a rental etc. etc? Or are people only interested in what's in your account at present? And in which case I can shred the lot!

Thanks as always for your help!

We opted not to take - then after 4 months I got a job involved with the casino's. Getting a license is quite involved and I needed the last 12 months statements for ALL accounts.

ALL means all: banks, savings, mortgage, credit cards, business accounts, store cards etc.

We bought 12 months worth but didn't need to show them to anyone. I think we bought them, and all utilities bills for the year simply because I was used to keeping the previous years stuff close at hand and had a mind block about not having it

Set up your online banking. that way you can still control your bank account from Aus and you can look back at statements online and print them off.

Could you scan them into your computer and then take all your copies on a memory stick?
I took my last couple of statements and toasted marshmallows while I burnt the rest

We've opted to scan and save copies of everything on a hard drive.

Before i moved out here i left an envelope with all the stuff i wasn't sure about with my sister (bank statements etc)on the basis that if they were needed she would post them. Never needed any of it but felt happy that i had a back up plan.
