Bank accounts
Hi Everyone
So getting closer and closer to the move.
We wanted to know if or how people managed to transfer all their money to Australia?
Is it possible to have a bank account set up even if you are not in the country?
Our problem is that we currently live in Canada (moved 8 years ago) so when we sent our money then we had relatives that could do it on our behalf.
We do not have that luxury anymore.
so any comments would be a great help.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Bank accounts
You can open a bank account on line from overseas and then use somebody like Ozforex to get a better exchange rate and send money to the bank account you opened.
You won't be able to access the money until you get to Australia and activate the bank account.

Check that out.
Commonwealth Bank have the biggest 'footprint' here in Oz, so the branch network is pretty extensive. It's not much of an issue once you get established, but I found it very handy, to just be able to nip into a branch, particularly in the early days here in Oz.

HSBC has a retail presence in most westernised countries. Their Premier account allows you free TT between accounts. If you open one of these accounts there you can then open up one here in Australia, send funds over and get an ATM card and cheque book posted to you. They also have annual fee-free Mastercard and Visa cards but I don't know if you can get those by post - I got mine after arrival.
