I reckon I will keep an ISA open with some sterling in, just in case I need to fly home in an emergency.

You know that once a non-uk resident, you will no longer be able to put any more money into this. You (or I do for my mini-ISA) still gain interest on it though. For this reason I also left another UK a/c open with a small amount of money in it - my g'parents/parents still give me token amounts of Christmas, so this goes straight into that account now. My IR tax rebate also went into this.

Trust me, I don't have enough money there to worry about it. I only opened the a/c a year ago, and nothing has gone in it since June

re. the ISA, as soon as I changed my address to Australia, the system automatically prevented any more deposits.

Yes we still have an account there with switch and visa cards too. We have an endowment left that we pay each month overthere. It also makes it easy for the rellies to pop some english money in there, we buy the kids prezzies from them and give them on their behalf, this way it keeps the account topped up. Great for a holiday too.
