Hi. Yep it's possible to open an Australian bank account whilst still here in UK. We have opened ours with Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
Phoned them up at their London office, they sent us a starter pack, completed the application form and returned it, then received our bank details back in the mail. We can now use this account in the UK and it will be activated in Australia once we go into the branch in Brisbane and prove our identity. We're looking at putting our money (sterling) into our account in UK, then retrieving it in A$ once we arrive, which should be, oooo, less than 4 weeks now!

Its also possible to open an Oz hsbc account. Go to www.hsbc.com.au click on online savings account, fill in forms, print ID verification form and take your ID to local hsbc branch to be verified. You need $2000 dollars to activate account. You dont need to be a UK hsbc customer to do this. Apparently their charges are less than some other Oz banks though a drawback is that there aren't as many branches.
