Jamie,

Have you thought about the Geelong area? Geelong is about 45 minutes from Ballarat, and not nearly so cold as Ballarat gets in the winter.

If so, mail me directly, and I'll be happy to let you know more info as we live in a suburb of Geelong.

Best regards.

Hi Alan, sorry to butt in on your pms. Surfing the site and NEED HELP PLEASE!
We are hoping to get our visas to move out early 2005 and the typical question is where? Husbands job is a field manager with a wide area around melbourne and hundreds of miles around. Have had geelong as a suggestion. Can you suggest anywhere, not too large, we presently live out in the sticks 3 miles away from the local village and 9 from the town, we love it, and therefore are not big townies . Any small communities that you suggest araound north Geelong. I then will surf for schools for our 11 year old daughter! All info gratefully recieved!
As a social note, have you lived out there long, how do you find it? We have never been, mad you might say, but my husband is going to be working for the same company, just different place! Our attitude is enjoy it,take the oppportunity and chill, hell its only a plane ride away!
Thank Vi : :)

Hello Vi.

Suggest you might contact a lady I know who advises on these things by the name of Sue Heath. You can reach Sue via sue - at - positivemove - dot - com - dot - au

I'd only say that North Geelong tends to be the "less desirable" end of town (eg Corio and Norlane). Maybe you need to head towards Bacchus Marsh?

Recognise also that the Geelong Ring Road is now scheduled to be built over the next two to three years, as Federal and State money has been allocated for its construction. That will make other parts of Geelong more accessible to Melbourne (the ring road will go around the west of Geelong and will link up with the existing road at Waurn Ponds, which is to the south of town).

Personally, Geelong works for us as a family. We live close enough to Melbourne for me to commute each day and to enjoy sport and theatre/music, and close to the Surf Coast beaches (I was ocean swimming at Torquay yesterday ...). In the three and a half years we have been living in Geelong we have been able to establish a fairly large network of friends quickly through school and tennis club - many of whom have been very supportive and helpful.

Good luck!
