Bag searches in oz shops
Just out of curiousity, does any brit who's in australia have an opinion on the policy of the larger stores to search bags when leaving the store, or any brit not familiar with this australian store owner policy have an opinion ?

Should we get a discount as shoppers each time we open our private bags since we are doing the jobs of the security, or do you think the uk would be wise to have such imposing policies ?
Personally, I dont have a problem with searches, just wonder about others.

I see what you're getting at but I think the consumer always has the right to shop elsewhere if they feel this way. And of course that's always the best way to get the message over to a shop!

I did see a funny sign in go-lo or maybe bi-lo, said "anything larger than a4 size will be inspected"
wondered if that was a4 by volume or cubed or would it be wise to carry a pack of a4 sheets to be on the safe side !

I have always been of the opinion that if you've got nothing to hide then why have a problem with something? CCTV in shopping malls should be looked upon as a method for protecting shoppers rather than spying on them. If someone wanted to look in my bag after visiting their store - help yourself.
The police can stop and search me anytime they like because I'm happy to take responsibility for my own actions. If someone is caught doing something that they shouldn't be doing, why does it always seem to be some one else's fault? "My human rights have been breached because you caught me nicking some pants from Debenhams?" File it all away next to "I'm suing you for assault because you stopped me from nicking your video after I broke into your house".
Some stores in England have a policy that you are not allowed to even take a bag into their store. Let them protect their stock. If they didn't, ultimately the consumer would pay more.
Don't get me wrong - this is a good thread and I'm not having a pop, but the Human Rights blurb that exists in it's extreme here is an absolute joke.

the only time I have resented having my bag check was when the security guard pulled out one of my wrapped sanitary towels into the open and asked in a loud voice what it was......

Then again every sort of customer service I've encountered since we arrived has been piss poor.

On a lighter note, I was on my way to detroit zoo michigan from toronto canada with a friend over from wales and just before we got to the border my mate needed a pee.
I pulled over on some country road and he got out and did his business but found himself up to his ankles in cowshit. He washed most ofit off but took his socks off and placed them in the trunk in a shopping bag.
When we went through usa customs we were ushered to pull over to a specific spot for a spot search. The customs guy had a look in the trunk and upon seeing the bag (and maybe smelling it) took out his gun and asked what was in the bag. After being told it was dirty socks he shook his head and told us to "get moving outta here"

I've just emailed OzEmail again (this is now about the 20th time) because I moved house a month ago and I asked them to move my broadband and phone with me. They haven't responded yet ..... But I have a direct debit setup and they are happy to keep taking that. My bank tells me that officially they can't cancel a direct debit but my contact in the bank tipped me the wink that they can put a hold on DD in an extreme case. Guess who I'll be calling in the morning

We had loads of greif with optus putting in a phone line, we told them we weren't getting the keys until 12pm.
That didn't stop them booking an am appointment. When we said we couldn't make it, they said ok and changed it to pm.
Then the day before we get a text to confirm our am appointment.
I phoned them up and they basically said tough either you be there or if you're not you won't get another one for a minimum of ten working days, I said why as it only took four work days the first time, he said you'll be penalised for not making the first one, even though I'd requested an afternoon one. Cue us leaving our cabin 6am in the morning.
