Codgob,Bacchus Marsh has a small country town feel whilst still getting bigger. It sits at the bottom of the Wombat ranges-mountains and apple orchids, turf growers, horse trainers/stables surround the town.
The town is about 50 mins to Melbourne city,1 hour to Geelong,40 mins to Ballarat on the Western Freeway and has regular train services.
Also is a historical town with heritage buildings etc.
Will try to find some links for Bacchus Marsh.

Mr Mover's right about the 'Marsh in winter, but expect the opposite extreme in summer as well!
Lived in Bacchus Marsh for a couple of years and if it wasn't for work reasons I would still be there.
Have a look at Darley, suburb north of Bacchus near the Lederderg Gorge, nice houses on big blocks of land.Went through a few weeks ago and the amount of kangaroos on the Black Forest road was amazing, best time at dusk when they all head to town.
Not too sure about the schools but the train service to Melbourne is efficient and to Melton as well, buses to Ballarat.

Lara is on the outskirts of Geelong,Bacchus Marsh side,so its a straight through drive from The Marsh to Lara, don't worry about traffic mostly a 100 K/PH road.
