Babies on a Plane

Sky cot or seat, that is the question

Eve will be 6 months when we fly, not sure whether to get her her own seat and go with the sky cot option. She's a big girl

Our little boy will be about 9 months when he flies with us and we are definitely getting a seat. Can you get a cot for them as well and what are the weight limits for them? Also have a large healthy boy. Must take after his mum.

I thought this thread was going to be about some fantastically-awful film like Snakes on a Plane..... what a great (in a dreadful kind of way) film.

Yeah I can see it now. Babies crawling and attacking people with acid vomit and rendering others incapable with shrill cries and crappy nappies.Lots of little mini me's intent on mass destruction.

OK, it depends on who you are flying with. The design of the cots can be different between airlines.

I flew with Malasian airlines last year and their cots were like hanging baskets on the bulk head, however they looked pretty good for the kid as they could fit right inside with room all around

I flew with BA and Quantas this year and their cots were more like car seats that popped up on a tray. The big problem for many people with these was that when the cot was up it was only possible to watch TV in the middle row, so don't get a seat at the side of the plane or theres no TV as it will hit the cot. Also the cot style was very restrictive, however the kids next to us had no trouble with them.

My kids are too old for the cots now, but once they get to about 1 year a seat is better anyway.

didn't have one myself however i did see a couple that were accomidated for on emirates and the cot was nice and practical but the baby was probably a bit younger they were moved to the row with the leg room and the tables and tvs thatslide up from the side. they had it quit cushy to be honest ! i think that i will be having to consider the same senario so will be watching with intrest ! i still don't know myself!?

Hi we flew at Christmas with Emirates with our 1 year old. We had a sky cot booked for him and it was great, it was like a proper mini cot, he is long but not a problem as he sleeps bent up on his belly anyway!! Was great for us as we could put him in it to sleep and eat and watch tv easily - we had tvs that came up from the floor in the arm rests and as sky cots are all placed in the bulk heads you get the extra leg room so great for the older 2 (aged 5 and 3) as we laid blankets on the floor and the kids on top so they could stretch out and sleep!!! When we flew Qantas the time before this trip my then youngest was 13 weeks old and we ordered a sky cot and they gave us a baby seat (just like in the car)!!!! So not great as he ended up having to sit up most of time!! Not good for that length of journey, but my 19 month old was purchased a seat, defo worth the extra money!!! Good luck with your choices!!

I would go for a sky cot for the age your baby is. My 9 month old slept in it fine on our flight out with emirates.

Only down side is if you hit a bit of turbulence and the seat belt signs are turned on you have to get the child out and put them on your lap because they need to take the sky cot down for safety reasons.:)

We flew to Samoa with Air NZ and our baby was 7 months old. We had a bassinette (not sure if thats same as sky cot) That was fine. My only problem was on Aukland to Los Angeles flight when American woman started shouting at me because my baby was crying. I found it handy because you are not twisting round to change nappies all the time and they are able to lay out flat and sleep.
