If you don't know what sort of jellyfish it was, then vinegar could aggravate the wound.
You're better off asking a lifeguard if there's one about.
But in most cases vinegar helps.

Australia's deadliest cretures average number of people killed per year:

Sharks 2-3 people per year
snakes 2-3 people per year
crocs 2 people per year
spiders 0 ( last death 1979)
stinger jelly fish 1 person per year
TOTAL 9 .

Out of a population of 20 million an average of 9 people a year are killed by deadly creatures. Compare this to an average of 10 people per year being killed by being struck by lightning per year in OZ or 1,600 being killed in road accidents.

well its made me happier, and cheered me up, 9 per 20 million in a year, i can cope with that, although if i were stung by a box jellyfish getting to the beach to find some vinegar would be a miracle, i thought the pain was so bad you freeze on the spot and then drown

According to the Bondi lifeguards on TV this week, vinegar can aggrevate it. They suggested rubbing a disolvable asprin on it and ice. They mentioned various old wives tales but missed the pee one - wonder why

But I don't tend to take vinegar to the beach with me Mind you, once I've been there half an hour, I don't have a lot of ice either

I thought you were meant to smother it in whipped cream then get your partner to lick it off.
Must be something else.
