Question Australianising my CV

Hello, not been on here for a while but have decided to think about making the move again after just having a fantastic holiday in Brisbane.

I have heard a lot about Australianising mine and OHs CVs...can anyone help me by shedding some light on what this entails please?

Claire

In one word?

BIGITUP

You can get examples online... Have a google... Or of course go to some one special who will charge lots of dosh for doing summit you can do yourself... What line of work are you in? Some jobs don't need the Australianisation... Others do. If you apply for a post through an employment agency they may offer you a pro forma that you can put your cv into ,.....or even help you do yours ....

Yes, have a good look yourself! I contacted our Migration Agent to 'Australianise' our CV's - they removed our DOB's and put in a few bullet points and that was your lot!

Thank God we hadn't paid someone specificially to do this for us!!!

Have a look at the government employment pages, state and federal. Their pages often give sample CV's. Pages like Seek.com and mycareer.com give employment advice and CV guidance. All free and quite adequate.

They'll also give advice on coping with the competence based interview approaches that most aussie public agencies currently favour.

OTT CV's with pix, logos's and fancy fonts and layouts aren't necessarily favoured - same applies in Aus as elsewhere, keep it clean, sharp and to the point. Arial point 12 with personal details, career summary/goals and current postion up front.

And you'll have to stop calling it a 'CV' - Aussies favour 'Resume'

A good CV carries weight in both the UK and Oz. The only thing we did was to put project values in A$ rather than pounds. We both got good jobs in Oz from the UK via phone and video interviews.

Just remember, your prospective employer will know you're from the UK and if they judge you by not having a CV that is Australianised then they are probably not worth working for.

Apart from an Australian address, there really is no difference between an Aussie CV and a UK one.

I agree. I was told to give more detail but that was probably a failure on my part...I've also found CV to be interchangeable with resume.

All this big it up might be ok for govt jobs. It seems that some people have to jump through hoops for some roles.

Morning,

Having applied for more job that I care to mention before I got my current job I have learn't a few things about applying for OZ jobs.

1, Really big up your experience, if this takes 5 pages do it.
2, Cover letters are just as important as your CV.
3, Make sure your CV and Cover letter are tailored to each job you are applying for.
4, Unless you are gifted or have experience in a very small market don't expect the process to be short.
5, The local paper and seek.com in my experience seem to be the best places to look for jobs.

I would venture that a 5 page CV only indicates that the author is unable to concisely document their employment history.

Or they are applying for the role of 'novelist'

But what the hell, it's more about who you know around here.

My tweak is often a few words...I rarely use a cover letter. Even on Seek I am too lazy to type more than a few sentences. I must be doing something right somewhere though.

Having said that, us IT boys have it made in these stakes. In a different sector and industry I suspect we would have to play a different game.

Or they're an IT contractor that's worked on loads of projects.
