Default Australian Universities to target British Uni Students

Up to 60,000 British students could miss out on a university place, in the UK, this year as a surge of people try to avoid next year's top-up tuition fees of up to STG3,000 ($A7,200).

Annual undergraduate fees in Australia usually range from STG4,100 to STG5,400, The Times said.

Australia has long been a popular destination for young Britons taking a gap year before or after their university studies.

"Tuition fees are the biggest change British universities have had in years," said Chris Madden, pro-vice chancellor of Griffith University in Brisbane.

"Before they were importers, but now with tuition fees, and given the exchange rates, the cost of studying here is not much more than staying at home."

Some 1,400 British students studied in Australia and New Zealand last year, mostly on courses oversubscribed in Britain such as dentistry and physiotherapy, The Times said

Madness if they do. Go to Ireland , heck even some eastern european Uni's are doing medical and Engineering courses especially in English to attract students and compare some of these Uni's to the smaller Aussie uni's and the difference is not huge. Add in to the sums - flights , visa's etc and it adds up. Also for most , not all, Aus degrees are 4 years not 3 so it all adds up.

This article is misleading as fees for overseas students to do courses like dentistry/medicine are much higher than suggested above!!
I've worked in HE in the Uk for quite a while and there is the feeling that many UK unis have a good worldwide reputation and Oz unis are an unknown factor. You've got to find the money to fund the air fares, and apply for visas, so its beyond the means of most young people unless they have wealthy/enterprising parents, or they have strong family ties in Oz. An increasing number of students/young people want to travel and work in Aus but not that many are interested in studying there as an undergrad.

To be honest I doubt if there would be 60,000 university vacancies here in Australia for them.

Only 1,400 came last year according to The Times.

My big sister's the head of marketing for Uni of Wollongong. She spends a lot of time in India and the Asian countries - Japan, Korea etc, but I don't recall her saying she'd nipped over to Stevenage to sell the benefits of higher education at her college.

Yes that sounds about right. From what I remember from living in Asia the students who couldn't get into the uni in Singapore went to NZ or Australia.

The British High Comm. in Singapore worked hard to attract Singaporeans to UK Unis. they all had to pay overseas student rates
