Default Australian prog on BBC2

Ok then, who saw the BBC2 Doc on Aboriginals??

Very thought provoking.

It really showed the total difference between aboriginal culture and
that of the white Austrlians. I found it very depressing viewing, it
seems that the relationship between the whites and aboriginals mirrors
(to a degree) the Isreal/Palastine situation in the middle east.
Obviously without the extreme violence, such as suicide bombings. Yet
who knows what the future may hold?? There a certainly a lot of angry
disenfranchised young aboriginal men. Total segregation exists on a
scale similar to South Africa in the apartheid years

It is a cliche,
but there really are no easy answers. It is so sad to see the cycle of
destruction of the indigenous population thtew crime, drink and drugs.

Equally sad was that twat form radio 2UE "shock Jock" saying that he
is pissed off as the whites have been there 200 years, so why have'nt
they (aboriginals) integrated and stopped bludging white Aus taxes.
Well, how many thousands of years had they been there before his
ancesters landed?? Yet in 200 years they should embrace a totally alien
culture and be bloody grateful for it.
I realise that not all of white
Australians think like this (such as my lovely wife).

I can not
possibly think of a solution to it, I think that lady (minister for
indegenous affairs) seemed to be sort of right. As far as no magic wand
can be woven and buckets of money alone will not rectify the wrongs of
the past and guarantee a solution. But she is a politician and part of
Howards government, so it may well be bull.

Anyone else watch it, have
any views on the matter???

Based
purely on the content of that hour long documentry I would conclude
that white Australians like to work, have a nice house and good
standard of living and want to see their children educated
Whereas the
Aborigines want to sit around all day on benefits getting off their
faces.

Dont flame me please....that was just the way that the program
came across imo.

The aboriginals felt a sense of alienation, in the outback town and in
Redfern. The only contact they had with the whites was pretty much
through the NSW police. Obviously it was not the friendliest of
relationships. It seemed that aboriginal kids are bought up with a lot
of their famillies in prison, drunk, skag heads etc. They had no
guidence through male role models. They are marginalized in towns and
cities. Living on dole cheques and none of them workings in the shops,
factories etc.

The white Aussies seem (on the whole) to see them as a
pain, they say "integrate, stop scrounging". The show portrayed Aus as
a very divided country where whites rarely encounter aboriginals except
on the TV or drunk, passed out in an outback town.

The outback town
shown used to have a curfew where aboriginals were barred after 6 PM.
That was only abolished in the 1970's. There is a lot of bad crap, who
knows the solution?

in away watching the docu (as you say one hour)it
offered very little.Would have been interested in more actual
comparisons .i.e you had the guy at the bowls club giving his view but
you didnt see where he lived ,type of job, standard of living so you had
to presume.

The others white Australians were the cop, radio host and
the haulage guy(and Amanda Vanstone-were's me visa?)So really was not a
true comparison of standards across the board.Surely there are *some*
white Australians that have no job, take dole, take drugs and white kids
dont go to school and drop out .

The docu really didnt seem to know
where it was going .Would have liked to have seen a comparison with say
a disadvantaged white family and see if they had same issues as
mentioned above

Bullshit. So many London city types are total coke heads and
get up every day to earn 100K. How many people smoke dope and drink
beer every night and still work??

Being born into a cycle of despair,
alienation and poverty is the problem.

In a lot of ways, you aren't too far off the truth. Like I
wrote in another thread, a lot of kooris have just given up.

Poverty, in the sense of lack
of material wealth, was an unknown concept to the kooris before the
arrival of the British.
