Australian Passport - do I need a UK police check or not?
Hello Campers!
Just wanted to know if anyone knows the answer to this question.
I made a validation trip in May 2004, but really arrived in Feb 2006 (one year ten months, or 22 months later) and have been here ever since.
When I passed my citizenship test, the guy behind the counter said that, as I have been out of Australia for more than 600 consecutive days, I will need a UK police check when I make my passport application.
I cannot find any information about this on the Australian Passport site. There are numerous pages devoted to the documents you need but the only mention of the word "police" is if your passport is stolen.
The reason this is a problem is 1) I can't apply for a passport until I have become a citizen. 2) I have been told that the day I go to the ceremony, my visa will be cancelled 3) I think it will take months to get the police check 4) there is no information about police checks for Australian Passports at https://www.passports.gov.au/Web/index.aspx
Has anybody out there been through this before?
Thanks,
DD
PS. Link to external site warning: I am not selling passports!

Yes, I think you might do. If you look on the actual application form for Citizenship is says:
Have you lived overseas for periods totalling 12 months or more since
you were granted a permanent visa and were aged 16 years or over at
the time?
Yes = Please obtain a penal clearance certificate from each country
(except Australia) in which you have lived since you were
granted a permanent visa and were aged 16 years or over)
and absences from Australia totalled 12 months or more.

I don't know if this needs to be the new £35 certificate (http://www.acpo.police.uk/certificates.asp) or if you can use an old £10 DPA subject access certificate??
