My friend has an australian passport, and he would like to come to the US and I'm wondering for how long he can stay here in the United States,
and does he eligible to work in the US ?

Australia participates in the Visa Waiver Program <http://travel.state.gov/vwp.html>.
That means your friend may show up at a US port of entry with his passport and a
return ticket and may be admitted as a visitor for up to 90 days. Visitors are not
eligible to work.
