I've just posted a link to this article on the BE Facebook page, but thought I'd post it here too, for anyone interested in reading it.

Can anyone else see the irony of this comment that followed this story ?
'Great news for the guys - dump worthless useless 'British' 'citizenship' (leave it for Africans & Muslims) and get a chance of a real citizenship of a country & people that have a will to survive. Fantastic hope all UK troops sign up - leaving Australia stronger & ''''Britain-Somalia-Bangladesh''' the worse. '

What the UK is doing to its military is a disgrace. The UK has stuffed up its economy (moving from a manufacturing based to a financial services based economy has worked well hasn't it) and its loyal military pays the price.

Great move.

Not analyzing at all but the irony is breathtaking.

This has been going on for a number of years on and off. Its the way we managed to get into Australia and sometimes the ADF do resent the soldiers for doing this despite the high ranking UK soldiers dropping down to low ranks and getting paid lower than their experience warrents. Many soldiers i know wher ein Australia less than 3 months before they were deployed to Afghanistan leaving wifes and families behind in a strange place leaning about a system so different to what they know.
Its not eary going this route but for some of us it was the only way.

Its called the 'Lateral transfer' system into the ADF and as has been said has been going on for years. If you are a bog standard navy matlot (sailor) with out any specialist skills or like I use to be, an Army infantryman (ex) then you wont get a look in as the ADF are after specialist trades.

If I would have hadt he chance though I would jump at it with the terms and conditions of service much better with the Aussies the pay and benefits make my old lot look archaic! The amount of time you are away on ops is vastly lower also

Hi Mandy, can sympathise with that as an experience. Migrated my wife and 3 x kids in from Mozambique (I'd been there for 2000-1 in uniform, clearing landmines). Then, I had to be posted to Timor, unaccompanied for 13mths. My wife and kids did manage to acculturate and survive. Now they are OzzyMozzies.

Just a warning to any UK forces who may be considering applying to the ADF. My husband applied last year for a specialist trade and the recruiting officer sent him hard-core porn attached to a letter asking him to fill in a skills assessment. I have no idea whether it was naughty photos of her, her boss or someone else (you don't exactly enquire about that sort of thing!) As part of their recruitment process they did ask for photos to be sent of my husband, we just didn't expect some to be sent back.

My husband was away and I was monitoring his emails (we were expecting them to respond while he was away). The email came in and I opened it in front of my 2.5 year old son. He said, "What is she doing mummy?". I was absolutely horrified and managed to close it down fast and then divert him. I left it until my husband came back and he looked at it and was equally shocked (being in HR myself I can guarantee that the sending of porn is not a normal part of the recruitment process). My husband stopped me complaining about it as he thought it would get him turned down and he deleted it, but I was furious. When I did finally complain about the way they behaved during the recruitment process, he did get rejected (as he expected but there is only so much you take before you say "enough is enough" and try and call them to account).

I'm not bitter as we are planning to come out anyway, but I thought I should give people a warning.

Suffice to say, any emails from the ADF should not be opened in front of children. Alternatively, if you want hard-core porn sent to you, apply to the ADF!

How do you know it wasn't spam mate and the ADF were as innocent as you in not knowing it had attached itself to their email?

It may have been a virus on their system or on one persons computer which attached to the email, but when we replied, it went directly back to the person it had come from (minus the porn which had been deleted), so we know it wasn't spam. The attachment was also legitimate as we got it through the post about a week later (the same letter), minus the porn.

However, whether it was a virus, or what it seemed, the warning still stands - don't open any emails from them in front of children.

Well it`s not something we ever experienced during during my hubbys recruitment process (though we were already in Oz anyway ) and nor have any of our friends who went the lateral recruit path. Personally I would have queried it straightaway, I think the ADF would not be happy to find out this had happened and would certainly have investigated.

I assume you reported that there had been porn attached? Being in HR you should surely be aware that emails do come through at times with attachments that do not belong there. I deal daily with ADF staff and have known several of them for years. I can assure you that either it was an undetected virus or something of the same ilk, and rather than just telling people to take care when opening emails the ADF should be informed in case it happens again.
