Australian married to foreigner-can anyone help?
Hi all,
Can anybody give me an answer or direct me to the best place to find it myself?
I am an Aussie citizen married for less than a year (6 months) to a US citizen. We were married in the US and have lived here for the last 6 months. My husband was trained as a medical doctor in Australia and is qualified to work there. He has asked about jobs in Australia and has been told that there will probably be a vacancy for him in the new year. We are sure that the hospital is not willing to actually sponser him for a work visa, they would just take him if he was allowed to work there. However he has currently no visa status in Australia. We will be visiting there in December-January (him on a ETA) anyway but of course he is not supposed to work on this.
What is the quickest and most appropriate visa for us to apply for so he can legally live and work in Australia? How long does this normally take to receive? And how much does it cost?
I realise that I have asked a lot and if it is easier to point me in the direction of a website then please do so. I have looked at a couple sites with info. on spousal visas however these don't give any idea of how long the process takes.
Thanks so much for your help. :confused

[Quickest way would be for your husband to apply for a spouse visa. Took my husband 4 months to get his as for costa to lodge the application think it was £425.00 then it was £100 for medical £10 for police check not sure what the charges are in U.S you could enquire at the Australian High commission they have a web site. Your husband will also need trade recognition. I am no expert hope this helps a bit

Hi Desusa,

You can bring him here and then apply for a spouse visa or apply for a
spouse visa from over there. Either way he will have full work rights, and
quickly. If you decide to apply when he is in Australia, get some advice
from a migration agent before you travel to Australia.
The answers to most of your questions can be found in the various migration
booklets at http://www.imm-
i.gov.au/allforms/forms_alpha1.htm#b , which
include partner migration. A full list of these booklets is as follows:
Booklets (these contain comprehensive information):
Business Skills migration - 1132
Child migration - 1128
Employer sponsored migration - 1131
General skilled migration - 1119
Other family migration - 1130
Partner migration - 1127
Overseas students, AusAID or Defence-sponsored - 1168
Overseas students, higher education - 1176
Overseas students, independent ELICOS - 1173
Overseas students, schools - 1174
Overseas students, masters and doctorate - 1177
Overseas students, non-award foundation studies, other - 1178
Overseas students, vocational education and training - 1175
Parent migration - 1129
Partner migration - 1127
Special migration - 1133
Sponsoring temporary overseas employees - 1154
Working holiday visas - 1181
