Hi
Does anyone know whether to work in local government in Australia if there are any citizenship or visa requirements (in addition to skills and experience)? I am hoping to go out on an SIR visa (if we get it) and in terms of work and sector experience there are plenty of jobs I could go for but am not sure if I would be considered if I am not a citizen or am only on a 3 year visa (even though it hopefully leads to permenant residency).

I am not sure but think government jobs are for citizens only.
It may depend on whether it's local or national government though I suppose.
Guess it's all about security.
Anyway let's see what the experts say.

Having obtained employment in the Defence Department but only because of a Citizenship waiver and having recently seen a Canberra Jobs paper I would say that you would either need Citizenship or some departments will accept permanent residency. Of course if you have the skills they really want they may obtain a waiver.

It's mainly the Federal Jobs that require citizenship.

For Local and State Governments the rules arent as strict.

varies from State to State as well - for instance in Qld you can have a temporary job (which can last for years!) with the State govt, while on a Temp Visa, but for a permanent contract you need PR.
