Australian law
Here are a few snippets for all of you aussie bound, just to keep you on the straight and narrow!
Lawmakers are proposing a new law that will not allow anyone to come closer than 100 meters from a dead whale's carcass.
A life sentence is 25 years.
Children may not purchase cigarettes, but they may smoke them.
You may never leave your car keys in an unattended vehicle.
It is illegal to roam the streets wearing black clothes, felt shoes and black shoe polish on your face as these items are the tools of a cat burgular.
It is illegal to walk on the right hand side of a footpath.
Under Australian Communications Authority (ACA) regulations, a modem can't pick up on the first ring. If it does the, ACA permit for your modem is invalid and there's a $12,000 fine. -Telecommunications Act 1991.
Taxi cabs are required to carry a bale of hay in the trunk.
Bars are required to stable, water and feed the horses of their patrons.
The legal age for straight sex is 16, unless the person is in the care/custody of the older person, in which case it is 18.

Children can't buy alcohol either in Australia but can drink it all they want in their own home.
It used to be quite legal in NSW to pull over on the left hand side of the road, go around the left side of the car and take a leak. A holdover from the days of horses and cart

The Northern Territory is the only place in the developed world where there is no speed limit, you can drive as fast as you want
on the highways, a good place to drive a Ferrari.

I would also be wary in a Ferrari and the low ride would be interesting on the floodways.

Everyone here is always saying that you can go as fast as you like on the highways there!
Or is the speedlimit 200 km/hr ??
They go b****y fast anyway, and with pretty short ummm... bits when you drive up to the highway.... they have a name... grrrrrr.

Montana's "speed limit" is actually defined as "reasonable and prudent". In reality, you can huff it all you want but if the cops think you are driving dangerously, they'll get you regardless.

And for those in the UK still thinking of reasons to emigrate, how about these (off www.dumblaws.com)
The severest Penaltys will be suffered by any commoner who doth permit his animal to have carnal knowledge of a pet of the Royal House (enacted by George I)
Any person found breaking a boiled egg at the sharp end will be sentenced to 24 hours in the village stocks (enacted by Edward VI).
It is illegal to stand within one hundred yards of the reigning monarch when not wearing socks (enacted by Edward VI)
A license is required to keep a lunatic (lunatic licences not required in Australia by the way)
and for the welsh and scots:
Chester: You can only shoot a Welsh person with a bow and arrow inside the city walls and after midnight.
Hereford: You may not shoot a Welsh person on Sunday with a longbow in the Cathedral Close.
York: Excluding Sundays, it is perfectly legal to shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow.

Yep and the number of skid marks leaving the highway was quite noticeable. Not all highways there are unlimited and near intersections they drop the limit slowly. My landcruiser was a bit fuel hungry so I did not put the pedal down too hard.

Cannonball Run!
In 1994, the first, and only, Cannonball Run in
Australia ran from Darwin to Yulara and back again. Based
on similar events in America, this high profile and often
controversial event ended in tragedy when a Ferrari
crashed into a checkpoint just outside Alice Springs,
resulting in the death of four people.

Maybe that is why the max you can go on the Lasseter highway to Yulara is now 110kmh.

The F40 driven by a Japanese dentist (I think) could be seen in the distance approaching the checkpoint he realized (too late) that he needed to stop so braked suddenly and went sideways into the checkpoint crew and their landcruiser.

Perhaps he was a Kamikaze driver.

Damn! That's me out then... what on earth is a girl supposed to wear then?
"Children may not purchase cigarettes, but they may smoke them"
same law in the Uk too isn't it.. it's just illegal to sell them to children. I think if a 15 yr old is swigging some beer and smoking there is nothing a policeman can do... but if you sell the child those items , then that is breaking the law.
I think this applies to both Aus and Britain.
Britain has some of the oddest, old laws still in place, like the selling of certain items on a Sunday..
killing welsh people who have a bow and arrow (spoil sports! ) is because we were known to be the best archers in the world ...and were notorious mercenaries. We could not be trusted, we often murdered our hostages instead of waiting for the ransom and handing the capative back over alive.
Cheers
