Australian Highway Code

Hello All,

Not been on the site for a while due to broken computer. Anyway, heard it's a good idea to take the Australian driving test asap after arrival to benefit from reduced insurance premium in comparison to driving on a UK Licence.

Do you think its worth getting hold of an Australian Highway Code book & genning up or it is pretty easy to pass without too much prep?

Bearing in mind I can do a left hook turn....

Those questions were bizarre, particularly this one

"What will happen if a testing officer asks you for a bribe to pass your driving test and you give it to him or her? "

Damn how did they figure out my plan to pass?:D

Here in SA we only have to do the theory had a go at it the other week, being cocky did not read the book and failed, I got 12 wrong and was only allowed to get 10 wrong.

Have to do it soon as sure I got caught on speed camera the other day.

if u sit the test once a day u will pass with your eyes shut.
when u go to do the test yourself beware. go own your own.
i know a guy who took his 2 teenage sons with him and they were (thinking they were funny) shouting out the answers.
the guy ran from behind the counter and ripped the headphones from his head, shouting he was cheating.
he was told to come back the next day for a resit. i think he took his boys home in the boot:D

Headphones, They are not that up to date in south Australia it is done on paper. I took my 22 month old with me when I sat the test.

The theory test to convert your UK Licence to a Victorian one is quite easy, but it is probably worth you getting a copy of the Rules and Regulations handbook from VicRoads. It costs about $14 and you can buy it online from the VicRoads bookshop. The VicRoads website is at http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au

BTW hook turns are done when you are turning right......

When we practiced at home my son was at the time 12 and he passed, i kept failing :( anyway we got a highway code book when we got here, went along to the place and then sat in a room with the kids beside us spinning around on chairs ( to keep them occupied:D ) pauls got 29 out of 30 and i got i think 27 out of 30. The lady would not tell paul which one he got wrong, perhaps she thought he was being big headed and felt sorry for me :D But anyway it wasnt to bad i had 4 questions that i had never come across and so had to guess !!! We like others we know also where given a reddish brown coloured driving licence which enables us to drive upto 8 TONne how cool hey :D it has on the front HGV LICENCE plastered on the front. Something to do with the 2 letters on our UK licence LR which here indicates HGV.

Looking at the licence regs there is reference to surrendering your UK licence when taking out the Oz one. There is a proviso that it can be retained if good reason. Anybody any experience of doing this? Reluctant to surrender UK on because so difficult to get new one if ever needed.

When I did my test, they just stamped my UK licence and gave it back, however, when my wife did her's a couple of days later they took it off her.

I wouldn't worry too much as it is relatively easy to get a replacement UK licence (if you are in the UK), and I can't see why you would need one over here.
