You must apply for your Aus driving licence within 3 months of getting into Australia. It depends where you are going but if you're heading for Vic then you contact VicRoads and sort it out from there. It is very easy and only takes about 10 mins.

Re: Australian driving license
Just to add the NSW side of things.
You can drive on your UK license for 3 months.
To get an Oz license, go to the RTA, fill out a form, take your passport, proof of address and UK license. Quick eye test, have you photo taken, license took about 5 minutes to come out of the machine.

3 months is if you arrive with PR that is.
With temp visa's you can drive on your UK licence for a lot longer, and possibly the duration of your visa!

If you have a UK licence and you are moving to Queensland.. say you ended up going to Sydney first and changing your licence there.. would that mean that when you move to Queensland you have to change it to a licence from there? Are they state dependent or can you drive anywhere in Australia so long as you have an Australian licence?

Hi, It varies from State to State as each have their own transport authority. The RTA in NSW only allow you 3 months from when you enter the country to use a Brit driving license. Licenses no older than 5 years from most european and American countries are acceptable for transfer, after doing a multichoice theory test. The licensing structure in Oz is very regimented. Starting with Driving Knowledge Test to get Learner, then Driving Road Ability Test to get Provisional 1 then Hazard perception Test to get P2 followed by Driving Qualification Test to gain full License. The entire span of time is nearly 4 years and if your Irish or english Full license is less than 3 years you may actually only get a Provisional 2 license.
The VIC (VICROADS) & WA (WADPI) authority are even more anal, while the Queensland Transport is supposedly the easiest.
